How to Keep Your Bedroom Organized

We’ve all been there: hours spent cleaning a room only to realize that’s just half the battle. The other half is actually keeping it organized for more than the next hour. Bedrooms are so high traffic – we spend so much of our time there – that things are bound to shift instantly. It’s practically useless to try to keep things in their place. That’s why my bedroom organization tips below are all about making things just a bit easier, so next time you go on a cleaning spree, all won’t be lost instantly after. Plus, although these tips are geared toward your bedroom, they could really be applied to any space of your own, whether it’s a shared dorm, office or living room.

Divide Conquer

Divide objects in ways that make sense to you, not just the look you’re going for. You can easily turn useful items like accessories or games into décor items just by displaying them tactfully on your shelves. For example, having my makeup brushes on display on one of my open shelves makes it so I’m not always removing items from my vanity – I already have it where I need it. Mixing these items in with attractive décor or sentimental pieces creates a balance between functional and for-show.

Outta Sight, Outta Mind

Once you place an object under your bed or deep within your closet, you might as well not own it. Same goes for the clothes in your wardrobe! If it’s not somewhere you’ll see it, you’re likely to forget it’s there, defeating the purpose of owning it. For this reason, keep things you use a lot (or plan to) in plain sight, and only store seasonal or rarely used belongings. Unsightly items can be stored in small boxes or crates to stick to your style without removing it from the area. This will ensure you don’t go rummaging through your closet looking for something you wish you hadn’t hidden from yourself, making a huge mess in the process. You’ll also be able to make use of all the things you own and love.

Use It or Lose It

Some of the best advice I’ve heard about organization is to only keep what you use. There’s simply less mess to stress over. As you can see, my shelving is pretty minimal because I don’t choose to load it with things I don’t find personally meaningful or useful. If you’re guilty of keeping things way past their prime, do an audit every six months or so to see whether it serves a purpose or is just taking up space. If you kept it out of sight like I mentioned above, you probably forgot you even had it – the ultimate clue that it’s unnecessary.

Make it Easy on Yourself

Lastly, don’t overcomplicate it. Keep heavy-use items in open places, make your décor functional and store things in logical ways. Keep all your important documents in one place, your off-season clothes in another, etc. Make it so easy to find what you’re looking for that you rarely undo all the work you put into organizing your bedroom. Clutter is inevitable, but hopefully these tips make it more manageable!

What does your bedroom look like right now? Be honest!
