Second Grade: Place Value

In Unit 2 of the 2nd Grade Math Made Fun Curriculum, we focus on place value to 1,000. Teaching place value (the value of where the digit is in the number, based on the location of the digit) plays a very important roll in understanding addition and subtraction with regrouping. As we provide students with a hands-on approach to learning place value, they are able to transfer that knowledge into addition and subtraction. In this place value unit, the idea of regrouping and memorizing steps is NOT the focus. We will focus more on these steps in Units 3 and 4.

In this math unit on place value to 1,000, students will learn to:

*Determine the value of numbers in the ones, tens, or hundreds place

*Count and show numbers within 1,000 in base ten

*Show and read numbers within 1,000 in base ten

*Compare numbers within 1,000 using <, > or =

*Mentally add and subtract 10 and 100 from numbers within 1,000

*Add and subtract two digit numbers with and without regrouping using manipulatives

*Add and subtract three digit numbers with and without regrouping using manipulatives

*Review and apply knowledge of place value within 1,000

*Review and apply knowledge of addition and subtraction within 1,000 with manipulatives

LET’S LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 2 IN ACTION…

CENTER NUMBER 1: PLACE VALUE MATCH

Read the cards. Match the standard, word and expanded forms of each number.

CENTER NUMBER 2: PLACE VALUE CARDS

Flip a card. Count the base ten blocks. Write the value on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 3: PLACE VALUE WAR CARD GAME

Two players each flip a card from the pile in the center of the board. Compare the numbers and write them in the correct boxes. The person with the highest number keeps both cards.

CENTER NUMBER 4: LARGEST AND SMALLEST NUMBERS

Flip 3 cards from the pile. Arrange the cards on the place value mat in order to make the largest and smallest numbers possible. Record the numbers on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 5: PLACE VALUE- FLIP & COMPARE

Each player flips over 3 cards. Write the number for each player. Circle the highest number. The player with the most numbers circled, wins the game!

CENTER NUMBER 6: COMPARING PLACE VALUE

Count the value of the base ten blocks. Compare the values of both numbers. Record the comparison on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 7: PLACE VALUE ADDITION (ADDING TENS)

Add the number and the value of the base ten blocks. Record your answer on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 8: PLACE VALUE ADDITION (ADDING HUNDREDS)

Add the number and the value of the base ten blocks. Write an equation to match on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 9: PLACE VALUE ADDITION (ADDING HUNDREDS, TENS & ONES)

Add the number and the value of the base ten blocks. Write an equation to match on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 10: PLACE VALUE- EXPANDED FORM

Flip a card. Build the number on the mat by counting out the correct number of hundreds, tens and ones.

CENTER NUMBER 11: ROLL, BUILD & SOLVE (ADDITION)

Roll a die. Build an addition problem from the row using base ten blocks. Add the blocks to solve the problem.

CENTER NUMBER 12: ROLL, BUILD & SOLVE (SUBTRACTION)

Roll a die. Build an addition problem from the row using base ten blocks. Subtract the blocks to solve the problem.

CENTER NUMBER 13: PLACE VALUE NUMBER BONDS

Choose a card. Count the base ten blocks. Add the numbers and record the missing sum.

CENTER NUMBER 14: ADDING BASE TEN W/ THE COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY

Choose a card. Follow the steps in order to solve the equation.

CENTER NUMBER 15: BUBBLEGUM STRETCH IT OUT

Look at the number on the bubble gum. Write the value of the number in expanded form. Record your answer on the recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 16: PLACE VALUE CANDIES

Choose a piece of candy. Write the place value for the underlined digit on the correct candy. Use H for hundreds, T for tens and O for ones.

CENTER NUMBER 17: COMPARING NUMBERS: TRUE OR FALSE?

Read the number sentence. Compare the numbers and decide if the statement is true or false.

CENTER NUMBER 18: BREAK IT UP AND ADD

Break up each number into tens and ones and write the values in each column. Add the tens. Add the ones. Then add the tens and ones together to get the final sum.

CENTER NUMBER 19: MAKE A MATCH

Find a number that matches the value on the board. Write the numbers on your recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 30: EXPANDED FORM ADDITION (ADD WITHIN 100)

Write each number in expanded form. Add the tens together and the ones together. Add the new numbers.

CENTER NUMBER 31: EXPANDED FORM ADDITION (ADD WITHIN 1,000)

Write each number in expanded form. Separate the hundreds, tens and ones. Add the tens, ones, and then the sums.

CENTER NUMBER 32: PLACE VALUE SUBTRACTION (2-DIGIT SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING)

Draw 4 cards. Place them in the boxes on your place value mat. Use base ten blocks to solve the subtraction problem.

CENTER NUMBER 33: PLACE VALUE SUBTRACTION (3-DIGIT SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING)

Draw 6 cards. Place them in the boxes on your place value mat. Use base ten blocks to solve the subtraction problem.

CENTER NUMBER 34: PLACE VALUE COMPARISON

Play with a partner. Each person takes turns flipping over a card. Each person places the card on a section of the game board (hundreds, tens, or ones). Write the number and compare. The largest number wins that round.

CENTER NUMBER 35: SPIN AND COVER

Spin both spinners. Cover a number that has the number from spinner 1 in the same place value from spinner 2.

CENTER NUMBER 36: DOMINO ADDITION

Choose 3 dominos. Write each domino as a 2-digit number. Use base ten blocks to add up the sum.

CENTER NUMBER 37: COMPARE AND SORT

Choose a card. Decide if the first number is greater than, less than or equal to the second number.

CENTER NUMBER 38: FLIP IT, BUILD IT & WRITE IT!

Flip a card from the hundreds pile, the tens pile, and the ones pile. Write the word in expanded form, standard form and written form. Record the numbers on your recording sheet.

CENTER NUMBER 39: CRISSCROSS NUMBER PUZZLES

Choose a card. Break down the numbers into tens and ones. Write the tens in the left column, the ones in the middle column, and the whole numbers in the right column. Add each column. Add symbols to make number sentences.

CENTER NUMBER 40: MENTAL MATH- SPIN A NUMBER

Spin both spinners. Write the number of the first spinner in the top box. Color the matching more or less. Write the new number in the bottom box.

For each page, there is a grade level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for Second Grade are being covered!


HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie. Since Unit 2 has 40 centers, I found it helpful to split up the centers into 2 bins.
