Herbivore Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment Review

Herbivore Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment ($58) is an intriguing facial night treatment that contains hyaluronic acid, fruit enzymes, and a blend of butters that act to resurface, smooth, and hydrate skin overnight. Sounds interesting right? That’s exactly why I purchased it.

I’ve run through quite a few Herbivore products and what I’ve tried, I generally liked. So, when Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment launched a few months ago I instantly grabbed a pot with hesitation. I have drier, duller skin and this formula promised to not only hydrate it with awesome ingredients like shea butter and hyaluronic acid but it also promised to gently exfoliate it as I slept. There’s something terribly appealing about multitasking products like this. I loved the idea that it would act as a sleep mask of sorts that softened and smoothed my skin as I slept.

Did it work?

Herbivore Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment comes housed in a 1.7 oz jar with a spatula. I appreciate the spatula but the packaging isn’t exactly stable, a tube would have been a better choice.

One of the first things you’ll notice about this mask or treatment, whichever you want to call it, is the gorgeous bright purple shade. The second think would be the thick almost body butter texture. It looked positively decadent in the jar and I was quite excited to slather it on my dry face. I read a lot of reviews that ranted about the terrible smell but it actually smelled like taffy to me. It has a sweet, fruity scent that reminded me of the plastic synthetic sweetness of a Laffy Taffy. It was nearly as bad as everyone was saying but I think it’ll turn off users that are sensitive to fragrance.

The directions are highly confusing as the box says apply generously yet the Herbivore website says to apply a small amount. I decided to try both options but I ended up sticking to applying a small amount for reasons I describe in a few minutes. You’re supposed to apply this on dry, freshly cleansed skin and it suggested to use one of Herbivore’s Facial Oils as the treatment and oil was formulated to work together as the oil creates a protective barrier around the Moon Fruit Treatment to help seal it in as well as add extra moisture. For testing purposes I used the treatment on its own as well as with my favorite Herbivore Phoenix Cell Regenerating Facial Oil.

The brand says the product will turn your skin purplish but as you massage the product fully in the noticeable color will disappear. I did not the purple cast at all however, every single I used this over the past few months I have run into horrible, horrible pilling problems no matter if I applied a lot or a little. I feel like I’m using Cure Natural Aqua Gel whenever I use this as little purple balls are all over my face and neck. It literally makes a big, giant mess on my face and I have flakes and balls of purple everywhere. The product never seems to fully absorb but merely pills off my face into tiny little balls. I stuck to using a very, very small amount due to this issue because it’s just a hot mess. I find using facial oil directly after makes an even bigger mess as now you’ll have greasy little purple pieces of moisturizer stick on your face. Sigh!

I didn’t give up on these. For the past few weeks I’ve tried and tried again and again and again to get it to work. But I’ve had little success with it and didn’t feel like it resurface, hydrate, or smooth my face. What it did do was create a big mess.

Herbivore has some great skincare products but I’d highly advise against a purchase of Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment. This was a big waste of money on my part.

If you must try it, you can get it now at Sephora.com.
