Dermalogica Ultracalming Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30+ Sunscreen: Review

When I attended a Dermalogica event in Melbourne almost 2 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see a purely physical sunscreen developed for sensitive skin in their range- and even more pleasantly surprised to see that it contained a decent combined percentage of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide for everyday wear. I’ve been using this off and on for about 2 years now, and I’m not sure why it’s taken so long for me to review this.

Dermalogica Ultracalming Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30 (what a mouthful!) uses 9% Zinc Oxide and 7% Titanium Dioxide. For everyday wear (not sports or intensive UV exposure situations) this provides a reasonably good UVA and UVB cover, excellent photostability and safety profile. I would like to see most of the 16% as Zinc Oxide (it is the gold standard, is more photostable than Titanium Dioxide, and interestingly has less of a white cast) but I’m probably nit picking here. A good heavy duty sunscreen for sports I like to use when running is the Invisible Zinc 50 4Hrs Water Resistant Sunscreen (swatched below)

The Ultracalming Super Sensitive Shield sunscreen has a light fluid texture, which is quite easy to spread and sits well under makeup. There is a slight shininess after application, but once foundation is applied this is hardly noticable. There is a moderate amount of white cast on my light-medium skin, but again once foundation is applied this is not noticable. Overall a fairly elegant physical sunscreen formulation that works well as an everyday sunscreen.

My sensitive skin appreciates the fact that this uses no artificial fragrances or colours- the light scent comes from lavender and eucalyptus essential oils.
