{Sewing Machine–Janome MC6600 - a Review}

Today I’m sharing a little peek into the Northern Cottage Studio…

If you’ve ordered a quilt – this is where all the gorgeous fabrics you’ve selected come together into your custom pretty! See the Wedding Guestbook Quilt there at the table being worked on? (This was part of a stunning wedding that I’ll share more about soon! )

I shared with y’all awhile back that I invested in a new machine for the Northern Cottage Shop. I wanted to wait a bit to share the details and a review of the machine … to really get a feel for this new machine … to make sure I loved it as much as I thought I would.

Good news (for me!) is that I’ve fallen more in love with it! She fits right into my space & keeps my creativity churning! This machine has become my trusted companion. I am with her every single day. She has proven to be a real workhorse for me & yet she is comfortable & smooth & I’m just tickled pink & ohhhh so glad that I took the plunge to bring her home to the studio. I haven’t named her yet, but lots of ideas are rolling around in my mind.

As you might remember, I went for the Janome Memory Craft 6600P – it had all the features I was looking for.

Remember I made the comparison to buying a new car – you can test drive lots of different models and brands & then when you find the one….yep, you just know! And you know when you drive a new (or new to you) car… that you don’t necessarily KNOW where all the buttons are (you have to look for the windshield wipers & heat controls & radio) … until you KNOW without even thinking…Once I got to know this machine and could control functions without really looking but by feel & by just knowing, ohhh it just keeps on getting better. Comfortable & smooth!

I was amazed at how intuitive it was to use right from the get go! It has sooo many features that I didn’t have on my old basic machine that now I’m not sure how I created soooo many quilts without. For instance, I’m in absolute LoVe with the accu-feed system. With all the quilt layers I sew through making the wedding quilts, baby quilts & throws, it rolls over all those stacks of fabrics like cutting through butter! It also keeps all those layers together and prevents shifting – which is awesome for my work.

I’ve played with and changed out the snap-on presser feet more with this machine in the few months it’s been home with me that I did in years with my old machine (it comes with lots of feet to play with). I was comfortable with exploring and trying new things (partly because I bought from a great local dealer! I’ll tell ya more about them below …)

Speaking of playing, there are lots of other things I’ve played with on this new machine…it has loads of built-in stitches (163 stitches!) & a very handy guide right at the machine to use as a reference to selecting the perfect stitch.

It has very bright clear lighting that helps complete all kinds of sewing tasks (even in you happen to be working in the studio in the middle of the night – ahem, just saying!!) And the machine has a fabulous auto-threader - I’m finding these two things very helpful indeed since – shhhh - I’m getting closer to needing glasses for this kind of work (not sure how or when that happened!!)

Another feature that I just adore is that auto needle up/needle down function. If I have to stop mid-seam…I’m very easily able to start right back up without any issues! Love that! You can do buttonholes and sew on buttons so easily, too.

And it’s fast (there’s a very handy speed slide function that lets you set how fast the foot pedal can go) I love how fast I can sew now with the combo of that & the accu-feed system – yay! Oh and the auto thread cutter (what a time saver that is – yes!!) With the number of quilts I’ve been whipping up, efficiency and quality are equally important!

I have stacks of fabrics all set to be made into gorgeous custom quilts – awaiting their turn in the production schedule.

There are lots more features that I want to play with & explore. I’ve been doing some free-motion quilting but really want to dig into that even more! There is a handy start/stop button & knee lift that I’ve got to practice with.

fyi … I thought I’d share my experience because it is such a big purchase & I loved reading about others thoughts and experiences as I did my research before buying. My only regret is not buying sooner! I’m not currently a spokesperson for Janome but I’d certainly recommend this machine from my experience with it. This machine would be a wonderful one for beginners and seasoned sewists alike!

---------------------

I purchased my machine from Kelly J Sewing Center – they’ve been just great to work with. They have lots of supplies in their shop to keep your creative juices flowing including a full range of sewing machines, sergers, material, notions, patterns, thread (yep pretty much everything you might need!) They offer a full range of classes, clubs, & events too! One of the best things about purchasing from them was the peace of mind that came with it….I know if I have any issues or questions, I can call or email & they’ll be able to lead me through anything. A very supported care package & sewing 411 is right there for me if I need it. Shoot on over & visit the Kelly J Sewing Center site (tip they have a “Truckload Sale” going on now at the shop if you’re local // you can also find them on breaking into facebook here & newly on pinterest here).

Here’s a little peek at some of the goodies I’ve been creating in the studio lately:

Happy Sewing!!

Off I head back to the studio to whip up more pretties!! ♥
