A Workspace For Two

A workspace for two is a happy, productive environment, so if you have to double up with your other half or even a colleague, here’s how you can make it a bright, airy space…

We reckon one long desk is ideal; the IKEA desk shown is big enough for two people or one computer and one craft area, if you have a crafty hobby. The drawers in the centre mean you have easy access to fabrics or stationery, and the desktop stays relatively clutter-free.

A tidy desk is a tidy mind, so keep the area free of papers and other unnecessary bits - anything that’s going to pile up, ruin your work zen or just generally put you off needs to go. With a large desk, you can easily create a sort of divide to make it more personal; invest in a paper tray or a plant pot to separate the desks slightly. It might sound like a stubborn move, but often we work better when we have our very own space.

If you’re using the desk for a variety of purposes, for example work and hobbies, make sure you can switch up the area to suit your needs. On this desk, pushing back the sewing machine and moving a weaving loom means you can plonk down a laptop or some DIY bits to make room for an afternoon of work or play. Having access to all your tools will mean you’re far more likely to get involved and get motivated, so keep this in mind if you’re a messy worker!

Stack up workbooks and other sources of inspiration and layer a plant or a pen pot on top to create an organised yet lived in space. Not all of us like a stripped back area to work in, so if you like a busy desk then go with it.

The best bit about having one large desk rather than two separate desks is that you save space, while also creating a work bubble that you can sit down and enjoy. We find we work much better with lots of table space, and someone else there to keep up the work ethic! It also means that if you and your partner or flatmate both like to catch up on work, bills or whatever in the evenings and weekends, you can keep each other company.
