DIY Build: Hairpin Leg Entryway Table
Hello again! Malissa here to walk you through another DIY build! This time we are building some simple furniture and I’m so excited because this piece is exactly what my living/dining room needed. In fact, I think this will become my dedicated seasonal décor table. For this entryway/console table, you need super minimal woodworking skills and a few supplies so it is a great project to tackle if you are new to DIY furniture.
Materials:
– 3 wood boards 6” x 6’ (I used this one)
– 3-4 wood pieces between ½” to ¼ wide and 12” in length
– Drill
– Screws
– Wood glue
– Sandpaper or a sanding sponge
– Satin gloss
– Paint brush
– 26” hairpin legs (I purchased mine from eBay)
Steps:
1. Measure the space you want the final table to be to figure out the best length. For me, it was 62” so I needed 3 wood boards but you may only need 2.
2. Take each wood board and use a saw to cut it the wood into the length you want the final table to be. Or do what I did and have Home Depot cut the wood for you! I had each of my 3 boards cut 62” in length.
3. Lay down each wood board side by side to make sure everything lines up correctly.
4. Take one board and use wood glue to line the side of the board with glue. Place it down right next to the middle board. Repeat with the last board and place on the end. (If you have clamps, use the clamps to snug the boards tightly together. I don’t have clamps, so instead we just used books and other heavy objects and placed them on top of the boards. We did this to ensure the boards were even while drying).
5. Wait at least 24 hours for the glue to dry.
6. Once the glue is dry, use the drill and screws to secure the 3 smaller wood pieces at even intervals on the board.
7. Attach the hairpin legs at each corner of the board using screws.
8. Turn the table over and sand the top and sides. I used a sanding sponge, which is easier for me to use than sandpaper. I did 2 rounds of sanding.
9. Coat in clear varnish. I would do 2-3 coats. If you want to stain the wood, do that now and then wait for the stain to dry. Then coat. The final product is a little bit less than 18” wide and 62” long and fits perfectly between this little wall alcove in my dining/living room!
