Vogue: Then & Now

The biannual fashion weeks come and go every February and September and then it’s on to Resort or Couture or Prefall. Capsule collections, store openings, MET galas and ad campaigns fill in the gaps and suddenly it’s time to do the circuit all over again… Yet sometimes you still get the peculiar feeling that while the faces and places may change with alarming speed, the clothes themselves aren’t changing at any appreciable rate. You sense that maybe, just maybe, you’ve seen it all before. One way to quantify change in the fashion industry is to look to the magazines that for decades have been the industry’s main critics and reporters. And as far as most Americans are concerned, one magazine above all others is synonymous with American fashion. That magazine of course is Vogue. We’ve decided to turn back the clock on America’s most revered fashion publication, to take the recent February 2012 edition of Vogue and compare it to the February, 1990 Vogue and to hopefully discover what has and hasn’t changed in 12 years of American fashion as covered by Vogue. Vogue, February 2012 Cover Look: Country darling Taylor Swift sports a wide-brimmed hat, choppy bangs and a chunky knit sweater for her first Vogue cover. Editor-in-Chief: Anna Wintour The buzz labels: Rodarte, Joseph Altuzarra and Tabitha Simmons The features: stories on “China’s Hottest Photographer,” the Mulleavey sisters, the latest anti aging methods, pill popping and the Fendi Baguette’s comeback. The Clothes: Stepford Wife approved sweater sets, printed pencil skirts, fire-motif heels, minimalist bags, and classically preppy gingham. Vogue, February 1990 Cover Look: Cindy Crawford sports a bouffant, dangling drop earings, pastel separates and an open satin bolero jacket in bubble gum pink. Editor-in-Chief: Anna Wintour The buzz labels: Calvin Klein and Issac Mizrahi The features: stories on the new hot fabric (suede), Brooks Brothers and Bob Jackie. The clothes: crisp white suiting, slouchy knits, graphic dresses with sporty detailing, and bold prints.
