Giving for CREATE! (Outside the Box with Jenn)

Sure, it’s really nice to give a physical gift, but today I’m giving you a tutorial. This year at CREATE California, we will be having an Mixed-Media Make-it night and art contest! We thought it would be really helpful if we had a picture or two for the announcement, so off I went to the studio.

Here is a little tutorial I came up with to help you create your own banner at home or to come up with some ideas for the contest at CREATE. (To particpate in the CREATE contest the flag must be made on site at the Make-it Night.)

These Watercolor postcards were originally painted while working on a “green” project. I figured now was a perfect time to pull them out of my stash and put them to good use.

I haphazardly spread gesso all over the already painted and stenciled postcards with an old gift card. Make sure to leave a lot of the background showing.

Note: The flags for the Mixed-Media Make-It night will be provided and will be slightly larger triangle shapes.

Once the gesso is on the paper, use a baby wipe to carefully remove some of the gesso to reveal a more vibrant section of the background.

I like to give a little extra layer on my flags so I used gel medium to attach a strip of sheet music to the top edge.

This would also be a great place to use some washi paper tape!

Time to cut down the flags. I mark the center on the bottom back of the postcard, draw a line from the upper corners down to the mark and then cut out along the lines.

Don’t throw out the small triangles—we’ll put those together to make more flags!

To make the flags out of the smaller triangles, I cut a triangle of white cardstock just smaller than the finished flag and glued the two small triangles to the cardstock with a glue stick.

The theme of the contest at Create is “Letter Me”, so I used multiple pens and techniques to letter my flags.
