How I Found My Way Back to Books

There’s something that you might not know about me and that might come as a surprise. The things is – I don’t read. I mean, I do read – blogs, articles, research paper – but not books. With the exception of the Harry Potter series, I never really got into them. I blame it on my early reading problems. I had a hard time learning and was a very slow reader at first. I guess I got discouraged and never fully recovered.

I’ve always been envious of people who love reading and just devour book after book. I love the idea of reading, but picking up a book myself seems like the hardest thing to do. For one, because of ALL the choices out there. For some silly reason, I’m afraid to waste my time on a book I don’t love. And second, I usually have a hard time getting into a book and quit abut 50 pages in.

Reading more books is the one New Year’s resolution I always make in my head, but never keep. It’s my equivalent of losing a few pounds. Sounds doable on the 1st of January, but somehow, no progress happens by December 31st.

Well, I’ve finally found my way to books. About a month ago, I stumbled on a random youtube video (something about a backwards bike) and at the end of that video, the guy offered a free audiobook from Audible. I’d never heard of Audible before, but I thought I’d give it a browse. To my amazement, they had a lot of the books I’d heard so much about and I thought I’d use the free credit to finally consume #GIRLBOSS. That book has been on my wishlist for almost a year!

Well, I’m officially a convert. I loved listening to #GIRLBOSS! Not only because the book is amazing (which it totally is), but because I sped through it in just a couple of days. I listened while cooking, cleaning, and making stuff, in the bus, on the train, and while waiting for the last 2. By the end, I was sad it was that short and couldn’t wait to start another book.

Looks like I will finally make good on that New Year’s resolution this year. Heck, I’ve consumed more books in the last 3 weeks than I have in the last 3 years. That’s huge for me and I really wanted to share the excitement with you. With the rate I’m going, I might even start a monthly book post (I think some of my friends just fainted reading this).

Last week, I read listened to The $100 StartUp and I’ve already queued a few more books I want to read, sorry, listen to this month. I’m hooked! And who knows, I might even graduate to a paper book by the end of the year.

Are you a book person? Also, any suggestions for my next book? I’m all over personal development and business books at the moment.
