Easy DIY Rustic Log Bookends

Hi, it’s Amy from Hertoolbelt. I like adding natural elements into my home decor, especially wood. I love surprising uses for wood, like this neat half log bookend found here. The natural character of wood grain is so unique and beautiful.

How to Make Rustic Log Bookends

Materials

  • Dried Log – suggest at least 8″ in diameter and at least 4″ thick
  • Sandpaper
  • Polyurethane
  • Paint brush

Step 1

Find a wood log. The wood should be dry, it is best if the log has been cut and been drying for about a year or longer. Otherwise the moisture in the wood could cause issues with the finish over time.

Cut the log into a manageable piece, about 8″ diameter and 4″ thick. This will most likely need to be done using a chainsaw.

Cut the log into half.

Cut the log half into half again (or quarters). Again this can be easily done with a chainsaw, or use a band saw for a more fine cut.

Step 2

Use a chisel and remove any excess bark from the outsides. Start with 80 grit sandpaper, and sand sand sand! Sand the cut faces until smooth and the cutting ridges are removed. Finish sanding with 120-150 grit sandpaper.

Remove all of the excess dusts, a vacuum hose works great. Applying polyurethane to bare wood can really accentuate the natural beauty of the wood. I used Varathane Polyurethane satin a water based polyurethane recently on a table, and it turned out beautifully. Using a brush, apply polyurethane to all sides of the wood. Allow the polyurethane to dry and add additional coats according to the label. I typically like to apply 2-3 coats.

Once the sealer has cured, typically a few days. The bookends will be ready for use.
