hands around my throat: zara trf lookbook a/w 2013

Although Zara almost always puts out lookbook videos that are on point and sartorially stunning, the TRF one in particular had me captivated. I'm very much a music person, so when I heard the first few notes of an old favorite, "Hands Around My Throat" by Death in Vegas, a track that I had previously only heard via the Animatrix soundtrack, I was mildly bemused by the seemingly jarring juxtaposition of the electric violin beats and strong lyrics. However, upon watching the ladies sashay confidently against brick walls and alleyways, the song choice was actually kind of perfect for Zara Trafaluc's current season: contrasting looks that come together harmoniously in a cohesive and bold collection.

It's very 90's but with a sharp modern sensibility borne of the 2010s. There's your floral minidresses, sherpa jackets, and dresses and oversized shirts in bright plaid and tartan patterns. On the other side of the spectrum, there's a sweet yet sassy schoolgirl appeal with the structured button-up blouses (very European), straight skirts, and slightly boxy blazers in a muted color scheme. As someone who is an immense fan of leather, faux or otherwise, I was very happy to see hints of it in the form of skirts, jackets, and a gorgeous peplum top. And those ankle boots! The studs and spikes adornments, the white Chelsea boots, and those gorgeous silver space-age ones (proving that metallics are indeed here to stay). I've very much in love with that gorgeous leopard coat and although I almost tire of statement necklaces, the carefully haphazard layered charm ones hold an undeniable badass appeal.

I'll let the photos do all the talking below, but you may or may not have the urge to rummage around for a pair of (non-ripped) fishnet stockings and a plaid shirt to tie around your waist. To say that I adore how TRF's A/W utilizes the best of 90's grunge and reinvents it as a clean yet still extremely edgy counterpart to a more decidedly classic collegiate prep look is an understatement; I'm practically salivating over almost all the pieces. But like I said, take a look for yourself and enjoy!
