“TIME” Looks Back at Hot Rods Racers from the 1950s

TIME” took to its digital platform to share some photographical documentation of the drag racing and hot rod scenes of the 1950s. The featured images were pulled from a “LIFE” magazine issue (a Time Inc. subsidiary) that was published in 1957. At the time, the editorial looked to put a shining light on a sport that was considered dangerous by many, and for good reason: Before the founding of The National Hot Rod Association in 1951, drag racing was played out on public streets and back roads. Most of these races were illegal, and they soon came to be seen as a nuisance in the public eye. The formation of the NHRA helped legitimize the sport for generations to come. The publication’s newly re-visited photo collection now archives a turning point for drag racing in the America. See it above.
