This is the first version I made from Simplicity 1358. I made it straight out of the envelope in view C, size 10 with no alterations, except for that I cut the back in two pieces and tapered in the waist to give more shape, instead of cutting it on the fold.
I bought this cotton knit at a sale at The Fabric Store in Los Angeles, my favorite source for silk prints and Merino wool knit. Almost every piece of fabric there is gorgeous, and the store itself is, is too.
In my second version of this dress here, my Missoni style dress, I lowered the neckline 2 inches. Small changes make a big difference sometimes. The fabric is really soft and nice quality, but it’s very thin and unforgiving. It’s more suitable for a top. I have to make sure I hold my stomach in in this !
It has self fabric bindings on the arms and neck. It’s a super easy sew, about an hour for me altogether. I’m not sure why I waited three weeks to finally hem it. Oh yeah, it’s because I was procrastinating changing the threads on my cover stitch machine. It took about five minutes once I finally did it. I have a Janome 1000 CPX, and it’s a cinch to thread.
Not sure if the fit is off here or if those wrinkles mean I need to just pull the dress down?
I wore this to take Gigi to the Santa Barbara zoo today after we dropped off her big sister to go surfing and Boogie boarding with her friends at the beach. Gigi has become quite the little fashionista lately, and is very particular about her outfits. It’s always fun to see what kind of looks my girls put together when they’re little, and each one definitely had their own specific vibe.
