DIY Polka Dot Tank

This top is one of those simple basics that has nothing particularly flashy or noticeable about it but will be in constant wardrobe rotation. It has a basic, comfortable fit and the fabric is utterly classic. I first noticed the Ella Top pattern when it was featured in Indie Sew's Summer collection. By the way, I want to sew everything in that collection and the Harem Pants are already in the queue.

The Ella Top is a long, loose-fitting tank with a back yoke, center back pleat and bias facings for the neck and armholes. I cut a size large and I really like the fit. It's fairly loose but not too loose. I didn't have a lot of this fabric so I shortened the tank by about 5 inches, making it kind of a normal length. I think this pattern could work really well as a dress too. It would be great for summer.

You will probably recognize this black and white polka dot fabric from the cropped crescent blouse I posted last week. It's a basic rayon with great drape, very easy to sew with and comfortable to wear.

I ignored the instructions a little bit and just stitched it up in a different order. It seemed a little cleaner to me to do it in the following order. I stitched the yoke to the back, then did both shoulder seams and the side seams. Then I applied the bias facing to the neck and armholes. In my method you have to stitch the bias facing almost all the way around and then figure out how long it needs to be and trim. It might be tricky for beginners but I thought it would be a little cleaner.

Overall, I love this top and I can't wait to make a few more. It doesn't use a lot of fabric and has a great shape so I can see myself using up a lot of leftover bits with this pattern. The yoke piece would also be a great way to use a contrasting fabric or play with stripes. Plus, I can wear tanks pretty much all year round. I just throw on a cardigan if it's a little chilly.
