Tula Pink Saltspring Dress

Last month, I made a slew of garments and never blogged about them. Since then I’ve been able to wear this dress a couple of times, so I thought it was finally time to blog about it! This is the Sewaholic Saltspring Dress, a knee-length or maxi length sun dress.

This post is part of my garment making series, Assignment: Project Garment.

My bust size would fall under the size 2 and my waist and hip under size 0, but from photos of the dress I have seen online it looked like the bodice was a looser fit, so I cut size 0 across the board. Right off the bat I made a small bust adjustment since Sewaholic drafts for a b-cup and my bust measurements put me at an a-cup (usually I like to take photos of my altered pattern piece but alas I cannot locate it).

I used 3 yards of Tula Pink voile from her older line, ‘Birds and the Bees’. I like her voile prints because the scale of the design is larger than the quilting cotton, and I do love large scale prints. The bodice is fully lined, and designed to have a blousing effect (the outer fabric is bloused and the lining is not bloused, making it very comfortable to wear). Even though there is elastic underneath the bust, there is also a back zipper.

I really struggled with how the back zipper should be sewn in…there is a sew along for this pattern, and in particular I referenced how to put in the back zipper. From what I understood (and sewed), there is an opening starting 3″ from the top of the back of the dress until you reach the elastic (maybe you can see a bit from my photo). I’m not sure if I misunderstood this instruction and there was maybe not supposed to be an opening left – I was not absolutely clear from the instructions and still am hesitant if I sewed the back correctly. The opening kind of bothers me, and I’m not sure if it was due to the type of fabric that I used for this project.

Sorry if I don’t have a lot to say about these one here – I think it probably would have served me better if I had written about this pattern as soon as I finished making it as opposed to a month later.
