Guide to Fabric Stores in Vancouver

Finding your way around a new city is often challenging. And finding stores that sell a particular product is sometimes even tricky for long-time locals! In the last few months, many of you have asked us where to buy fabric in Vancouver and so we decided to compile a Guide to Fabric Stores in Vancouver.

The guide features fabric stores in and around Vancouver and answers common sewing-related questions such as “Do they also sell notions and craft supplies?” or “I wonder if I can get swatches for free.” Knowing whether a store is wheelchair-accessible or if you can pay with a credit card also comes in handy, so you’ll find the answers below! All stores can be reached with public transit – just check Google Maps for directions!

Atex sells a great selection of quality fabrics such as silks, linens, wools, bamboo, cottons, and synthetics. They say their prices will make you want to come back time and time again!

Sewing
They also carry Sewaholic patterns but do not sell notions, yarn or other craft supply.
The minimum cut is 20 cm and you can get colour swatches of 2″ x 1″.

Payment
Atex accepts all credit cards except American Express. You can also pay with direct debit or cash including US dollars.

Inside the store
Their lower floor is wheelchair-accessible and they have a public bathroom. Please do not bring food or drinks inside, though!

There’s paid parking on the street at meters.

Button Button

…not exactly a fabric store but too awesome not to mention!

“Button Button is the only all-button store in Canada and we have steady customers from Japan to California to England. This tiny shop is a moveable feast of very tiny, extra large, rhinestone, steampunk, celtic, skulls, sailor, reproduction Victorian, men’s blazer and suit buttons, novelty, ceramic, glass, wood, bone, horn, leather buttons, and more.”

Button Button has sewing buttons from all over the world and some from the past, made of an amazing variety of materials. In the 20 years they’ve been there, they’ve seen the favorites wax and wane. Right now, knitters are loving the wood buttons as well as the extra large ones. First Nations buy up the shell buttons.

They sell mainly buttons but also some things for making buttons into rings, earrings, cufflinks, bracelets or magnets.

Payment
Button Button accepts MasterCard and Visa, debit, and cash as well as US dollars.

Their store is wheelchair accessible and they have a public bathroom. Please do not bring food or drinks inside, though!

Mon – Sat 9 – 5.15, closed on Sundays and stat holidays
Dressew sells all kinds of fabrics from basics to fashion to novelty.

Sewing
At Dressew, you can also buy notions and other craft supply, such as thread, elastic, or beads. Dressew only carries Burda patterns but has lots of them! Their minimum cut is 10 cm, which is also the only way to swatch fabric. The minimum in the sale section is 1 m.

Payment
Dressew accepts cash and Interac.

Inside the store
They have a public bathroom, just ask staff for the key! While they aren’t wheelchair accessible they do what they can to accommodate people who need help. Please do not bring food or drinks inside.

You’ll find metered parking on the street.

The Cloth Shop stocks 100% cottons and a few linen/cotton blends. You can find fabrics and quilt kits there.

Sewing
They carry their own Bella Moon pattern line, which means all their kits and quilting patterns have been designed by them. They carry mostly quilt related products, e.g. books, barring, rulers, and have a small selection of notions. Their minimum cut is 20 cm.

Payment
The Cloth Shop accepts Visa, Mastercard, debit, and cash as well as US dollars. You can order online using Visa, Mastercard, Discovery or PayPal.

Inside the store
Their store is wheelchair accessible and you will find public bathrooms in the building next door. You may even bring food if you are careful.

There’s free 1-3 hour parking and paid parking.

Fabrics etc. has a great variety of fabrics: You will find clearance priced quilting cottons, taffetas and silks for dressing up, wool suitings, natural fibres in knit and plain weaves for clothing and home decor (cotton, linen, silk and wool), chalk cloth, and cotton laminate.

You may even bring your pet (given it’s well-behaved) and bike inside!

Sewing
They carry Indie patterns like those from Sewaholic, Colette, PetitePlus, or Folkwear. They also sell a good basic supply of sewing and quilting notions and some cross stitch supplies.
The minimum cut is 10 cm and you can get a finger sized swatch for free.

Payment
Fabrics Etc. accepts cash, VISA, Mastercard, American Express, and Discovery. US cash is accepted at current bank rates, too. Teachers and students even receive a discount!

Their store is wheelchair accessible and they have two public bathrooms. Please do not bring food or drinks inside.

There’s limited free parking on the street and more free parking off the lane at the rear of the store.

Outdoor Innovations is a small family run business that started back in 1992. They are a retail outlet that sells outdoor fabrics and notions as well as an outdoor gear repair center.

Sewing
They carry a large selection of Cordura, No See-Um Netting, Ripstop nylon, mesh, Sunbrella, and other outdoor fabrics and they also sell a great selection of notions. Their minimum cut is 50 cm.

Payment
Outdoor Innovations accepts Visa and Mastercard, debit, and cash. You can also pay with US dollars.

Outdoor Innovations is accessible by wheelchair.

Quilter’s Dream Fabrics

Quilter’s Dream Fabrics sells Batik and Asian quilting cottons and silk. Their bestseller is their vintage kimono silk.

Sewing
You will find the owner’s patterns in the store as well as a few quilting notions including thread, needles, and rulers. There is no minimum cut and swatches are free.

Payment
They accept debit, cash, and VISA, MasterCard, and American Express. You may also pay with US dollars and can place orders on the phone or via email.

Inside the store
While they have a public bathroom, their store is unfortunately not accessible by wheelchair. Also, please do not bring food or drinks inside.

It’s a residential neighbourhood so there’s free street parking.

Spool of Thread’s curated fabric collection is primarily mid-weight with a modern or vintage-inspired feel. They also carry knits, double gauze, canvas, flannel and lighter garment weight cotton voiles and lawn, as well as a variety of interfacing.

Sewing
They sell patterns from numerous independent companies such as Colette, Sewaholic, April Rhodes, Grainline Studio, Wiksten, Deer and Doe, and Amy Butler. While they do not carry yarn or craft supply, you can get Kiriki Press embroidery kits and may choose from a huge selection of notions. Their minimum cut is 9 inches. They do not cut swatches, though.

Payment

Spool of Thread accepts credit (Visa and Mastercard), debit, and Canadian cash (no US dollars). They also accept PayPal through their website for the purchase of gift certificates.

Inside the store

Since their store features a Sewing Lounge, you can bring food and drinks inside! There is a public bathroom and the entire store is wheelchair-accessible. Dogs are welcome too, and they might even have a treat stashed behind the till!

Free 2 hour parking is available in front of the store. There is also a residential area with free parking within easy walking distance behind the store to the north.

Laura’s Fashion Fabrics sells fashion fabrics for clothing and the required accessories as well as quilting fabrics, basics, and flannelettes. Right now, their rayon batiks sell great for tops and pants.

Sewing
They sell patterns from Vogue, Butterick, McCalls, and Kwik Sew and craft supplies and notions such as glues, felts, zippers, or twill tapes! The minimum cut is 25 cm and from there on, they cut every 5 cm.
