Rustic Traditional Fall Living Room

My rustic traditional living room is decorated for fall! Come see how I incorporated earth-tones, velvet and fuzzy textures, a cozy glow and a few branch clippings to bring an autumnal feel to the most used space in our home.

Incorporating Earth-Tones

Every fall I try to decorate a little different than the year before, while also trying to re-use the basics. Last year I used pink, mauve, and burgundy with neutrals. This year, I was gravitating towards earth-tones. I wanted to keep things consistent with the the front room and kitchen but add a slight color variation for my accent color, and that ended up being rust. I only bought 2 new pillows and everything else I already owned! This is why I recommend investing in several neutral, timeless pieces that I can mix and match with different seasons for years.

Doesn’t that rust look so good with this palette? The browns and wood tones, oatmeal-color, navy, and different shades of white are both my neutrals that stick around.

Velvet & Fuzzy Textures

With the cooler weather that fall brings outside, I love to bring back those cozier textures inside. These cozy and warm textures invite you to cuddle up and stay awhile.

You can’t go wrong with velvet (one of my favorite textures) and the price of the rust-colored pillows are nice ($10 each). I always swap out the insert for a down-filled one– it hold up much better over time. I have a set number of inserts for a given room in our home and just store the pillow covers I’m not using.

One thing I always bring back out with the cooler weather is fuzzy or knit throws. The oatmeal-colored throw is pretty heavy but I love how it drapes and stays put on the couch. Whether the kids have it draped over them or the dog is curled up on top, it doesn’t leave the couch.

I usually have 1 throw per couch and a couple hanging on the blanket ladder.

A Cozy Glow

Since we don’t have a fireplace, in the fall I make sure every living space has either a candle or twinkle lights or both. In this case, both!

A narrow table behind the sofa was one I built years ago, and is a great way to add layers in front of the large artwork. I restyled the table to include some vintage books, a candle, and a glass pumpkin with Fairy lights inside. The fall glow is so cozy!

I got a couple glass pumpkins last year and they are so simple and so pretty to use for table or shelf styling, or even in a fall tablescape.

I also put a small candle on the coffee table, but we probably won’t keep it lit very often since it’s within reach of Nina, our 1 year-old.

A Couple Branch Clippings

That rust color from the pillows needed a ‘friend’ in the room, so luckily I was able to find a couple pretty tree branches with the same rust color leaves.

It took me several days to get this room finally put all the way together for pictures, so the leaves have turned curled and crunchy. I think they are still pretty and I won’t replace it until I HAVE to (the leaves drop).

This year I decided to leave my bookcases neutral with no seasonal decor in them. I honestly didn’t have the energy to restyle them and I still love how they look. The only things new here since Spring is that jug vase and the driftwood. I picked up the jug vase at AtHome Stores last month. Doesn’t it look like pottery? It’s resin!

The driftwood was an antique store find from our stop on Ice Cream Day.

I keep switching rugs in here (much to the frustration of Bruno), in the attempt to find a color palette that will work over many seasons, isn’t too bold or bright, but also has an interesting timeless pattern.

I thought I found the answer in this Loloi rug, and I was excited with the incredible price. However, it is more of a soft mat, not a traditional rug like I thought. There is no pile– no fibers standing up like most rugs. It is printed color and pattern on a soft fabric. You could literally sweep the crumbs from it, which does make it easy to clean. We have a thick rug pad underneath and with this rug I would highly recommend that just for comfort. We will keep it for awhile though because I need to sell our previous rugs before I ‘try again’.
