Movie Review: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This film picks up where the hit 2012 film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, left off.

Old favorites return in this charming sequel, including new “guests” including Richard Gere who is still just as handsome as ever.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel stars Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Dev Patel, Richard Gere, David Strathairn and many other wonderful actors.

In the new film, Muriel and Sonny want to purchase the property next to their hotel to expand it and make it the Second Best Marigold Hotel. The hotel magnate will consider it but he wants to send a company inspector to evaluate the project. The only problem is they won’t know who he/she is.

Sonny is also dealing with his upcoming wedding. Trying to run the current hotel and working on opening up a second location is taking up a lot of his time and taking him away from his upcoming wedding to Sunaina.

The other residents at the hotel are all dealing with issues of work and relationships. One resident especially has a lot more to deal with – poor health.

Will they succeed in opening another hotel? What will become of the residents at the first hotel? Will they finally find peace, love and happiness? Will Sonny make it down the aisle or will something come between his marriage to Sunaina and keeping up with two hotels? To find out you need to pick up a copy of The Second Best Marigold Hotel. Look for it where movies are sold.

I don’t know how these “Exotic Marigold Hotel” films do with a younger audience, but as a forty-something-year-old woman I find these movies charming and endearing. So many people assume that when you are in your 60’s, 70’s and beyond that you are meant to sit on a rocking chair in a retirement home for the rest of your life. These films prove that age is just a number and even in the “winter” of our life you can still have love and romance, work and prove to be a success with everything you do. For that reason I really enjoy these films. They prove that you are “never too old” to do anything.

I think the film makers did an outstanding job casting for this film (and the previous film). The ensemble is perfect for this film and for the roles they play. I honestly cannot pick out anyone who stands out from the rest because all the actors in this film not only play their characters well, they “are” their characters. Although every time I saw Maggie Smith on the screen I kept thinking about her role in the Harry Potter films.

This film is funny, sweet, lively, and very entertaining. I might even dare to say that I liked this film a wee bit more than the original. I’m actually hoping that they make a third installment.

I LOVE seeing India as the background for this film. It looks amazing there. After watching this film I added “Visit India” to my Bucket List. I love the architecture, the customs, the clothing and the culture. It’s beautiful.

The film does come with some bonus features including;

  • Story
  • Cast
  • Returning to the Marigold Hotel
  • Blossoming Relationships
  • Filming in India
  • Gallery

Normally I write a bit about the bonus features too, but this time I wasn’t able to watch them. I am planning on watching them in the near future and I can update the post at that time.

The film has a PG rating. I didn’t find anything wrong with this film to warrant that rating but I guess little ones might not understand some of the situations (us “older folks” do – LOL).

The run time is 123 minutes.

Here is the trailer for your enjoyment. Please note the trailer is for the movie when it was coming to theaters. It’s available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download now.
