Office Weekly Round-Up: The Early 2000s & Now

For those who lived through the early 21st century, you guys know that those years were pretty fun, funny, and sometimes a little strange. In this week’s roundup, we take a look at some of the trends and events that were going on during those years and see how it compares to the way we see and do things in the present day. Most of us didn’t even notice, so let us show you what you left behind!

Streaming? Do you mean like a river?

Back in the early 2000s, we listened to music on physical CDs that we either burned or bought (remember going to the store to buy CDs?). We had to buy batteries from the store and carry multiple CDs to listen to all the music we wanted. Then came smartphones, and with it, streaming music services. Owning your music isn’t really that popular anymore and we can’t remember the last time we saw a physical album from an artist.

Popcorn? Just order a pizza!

We probably still go to the theaters every once in a while, and once in a blue moon we buy a movie on DVD, but for the most part we now watch our movies on video streaming services like Netflix using streaming devices like Roku.

Towers: as old as dinosuars (well, almost)

We all owned computer towers at one point when they were fashionable (and our only cost-effective option). But now our smartphones and tablets do most of what we did on our computers, so our towers are better suited to collect dust than anything else in this day and age.

There’s nothing ever good on. Oh, right; I got Netflix.

Remember when you had to flip through dozens of channels just to find one show to watch for about an hour only to start the process all over again? Well, we don’t either, because we’re still binge-watching House of Cards. Cable can take a hike!

Phones used to flip?

It’s hard to imagine a time before smartphones were the norm. Back then, we pretty much used our phones for calling and texting. Now, we only use our phones for texting and selfies. How awkward is it to take a phone call from someone?

The Disney machine was hard at work.

Is it just us or did it seem like there were more Disney stars in the early 2000s than in any other period in this company’s history? Some of these people you may still recognize today: Shia LaBeouf made a couple Transformers movies, and Lindsay Lohan…well…maybe we shouldn’t get into her present-day activities.

The world as we knew it changed for us.

Before 2001, terrorism wasn’t something we thought of as happening to Americans on such a grand scale. Then 9/11 happened, and we were never really the same as a nation after that. Nowadays, we’re mostly back to involving ourselves in the lives of celebrities. Kim Kardashian actually came out with a book that’s nothing but selfies. Yeah.

We prefer Angry Birds these days.

Remember playing video games on TVs? Once in a while we may fire up the old Xbox, but we can download so many games to our smartphones now, most of said games costing just a dollar!

So even though the early 2000s are now just a memory, it’s nice to remember that we really had it good during those years for the most part, but now we have all this digital technology to…Yes! We just beat our high score on Angry Birds again!
