Leafs Blowout Habs as Matthews Makes History

The Toronto Maple Leafs put this game away in the first period scoring 4 goals on just 15 shots. With Carey Price sidelined, Toronto bounced back from their Monday loss and made quick work of the Canadiens’ young goaltender. And when just when it looked like the Leafs were going to end the game with four goals, Auston Matthews stepped in a made history.

On a drop back pass from Mitch Marner, Matthews snapped off a beautiful five-hole goal with his now patented quick release motion. In doing so, the Arizona-based superstar became the sixth player since 1995-96 to record 40 goals in 49 games or fewer in a single season. With number 40 under his belt, the Leafs centre has further cemented his position at the top of the scoring race.

If NHL season ended today, Matthews would become the first Leafs player in history to win the Rocket Richard trophy.
