May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor

The Hunger Games Exhibition opened two weeks ago and yesterday afternoon I visited the Times Square spectacle. The exhibition, located at the Discover Exhibition Times Square on West 44th Street, is terrific. Once inside you are ushered to the start of the exhibit where, after your tickets are scanned, you wait in the queue until a small group has formed and then you are led into a room with the intro video. It starts with a life-size Effie Trinket welcoming you from the steps of the Hall of Justice and wishing you good luck, “May the odds be ever in your favor”.

The exhibit has features more than 1,000 real props from the movies and they have 46 costumes used in the three Hunger Games films. From the minute you walk through the double doors into District 12 you really feel like you are on set in North Carolina. They did a phenomenal job telling the story of Katniss and the cizitens as Panem – as you meander through the maze you are taken on a seamless journey through the story presented in the three movies, I was just waiting for my style icon Jennifer Lawrence to appear around each corner.

I learned a great deal about the making of each movie but even more about the author, Suzanne Collins, and approached the plot and character development of each book. My favorite part of Hunger Games Exhibition had to be a three way tie between the chariot with costumes on fire, Effie’s gorgeous outfits, and Katniss’ stunning wedding dress which was even prettier in person.

When my friend Samantha (who recently started a blog, The Blue Eyed Adventurer) and I finished the exhibit there was a green screen where we were able to don capes and you were digitally placed chariot from the first movie. I was going to pass until they told me JLaw has been there the week before and wore the same cape – sold. The video was funny but we did not buy it, or even ask how much it was. The gift shop at the end of the tour had every item imaginable, from Barbies of Katniss and Effie to Capital wine glasses and ;limited edition 18K gold and diamond Mockingjay pendants that will set you back $7,500 a piece.

I would not consider myself a huge fan but the experience from start to finish was worth the $30 and I learned a ton throughout the process. After more than an hour touring the exhibition it made me ready to see the final movie Mockingjay- Part 2 but unfortunately we will all have to wait until the end of November.
