My 4th of July in Cape Cod

My brother and I arrived back in New York City at midnight yesterday but it was well worth it – I spent my 4th of July in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and loved every minute of it. My long weekend was a combination of too much fun to contain in one blog post and one where I focused more on spending time with my family than taking photos and documenting, thus my pictures and days blur together. This recap will be broken out into three sections: family, food, and fireworks.

This past weekend definitely deviated from my fitness goals but sometimes you have to live a little. I still tracked everything I ate, even though some days were less than pretty, and tried to include fresh fruits and veggies with all meals. My first night my dad fired up the grill and we had the most wonderful marinated steak tips and fresh corn on the cob.

My grandma makes the most amazing “Nana squares” a magical butterscotch and chocolate mix that I will have to recreate for the blog soon and those were served for dessert along with my aunt’s almond balls.

On this evening we lit up the fire pit and laid out all of the makings for the perfect s’mores – jet puffed marshmallows, classic Hershey’s chocolate bars, and Honey Maid graham crackers.

On the following day we had a wonderful lunch of homemade lobster rolls, cold cuts, and a delicious fruit salad (even if it was in a Boston Red Sox bowl – Go Yankees!)

At the massive 4th of July party attended by almost 1,200 people there were delicious fresh-shucked oysters and homemade kettle corn which I split with my mom, pictured below, along with Dell’s Frozen lemonade, a fried dough station, and an ice cream truck!

Now on to family – this weekend in addition to the holiday we celebrated my grandma’s 85th birthday with my dad’s side of the family. Everyone who could get off of work came out to the Cape and we had a great turnout including all three of my grandma’s children and more than half of her grandchildren. Before celebrating my with cake on Friday we headed out to the 5th hole of the golf course behind our house and I played frisbee gold with my cousins while the “adults” looked on.

Afterwards we headed to the big 4th of July party and got a few nice family photos while at the club for the celebrations. And yes, that very tall man in the first photo and the photo below? He was Uncle Sam on stilts standing around seven and a half feet tall – I asked.

Lastly, we were able to watch a phenomenal firework show and I got to practice taking pictures of them. Looking back at the 30 shots I took over the course of the 20 minute show I think they are a great improvement from previous years!

This weekend was exactly what I needed, what did you do for the 4th?
