My Love Affair with Class Pass

Class Pass is one of the best decisions I have made in a very long time. I mentioned the service in my fitness journey post but today I wanted to go into a more detail. For $125 per month I pay for unlimited access to hundreds of exercise classes across New York City and for the past three months I have loved trying different workouts. For everyone who does not live in New York City it may seem like it costs an arm and a leg but more on that later.

I have always found it easier to workout with instructors who dictate the exercises and encourage me. For the past two months I have tried to stick to a pattern – one day cardio, one day strength, and then one day off. Between working late and blogging events sometimes I have to shift things around but that I try to stick with that cadence. One of the issues people have with Class Pass is that you can only visit a studio three times per month month. Sure, this is a bit inconvenient but by the end of the 30 day billing cycle I have maxed out my thee times per month at my favorite studios forcing me to mix it up. I have tried Pilates and realized why all the celebs love it, I have gone out of my comfort zone with barre, and I have confirmed that I am not very good at hip hop dancing.

This post is in no way sponsored or compensated by Class Pass (although that would be awesome), I am simply obsessed with the service. Having to pick my favorite aspect of Class Pass is difficult but I would have to say the value. The studios I attend on an almost daily basis are extremely expensive if you were to pay per class. When I am cycling at Flywheel, pictured above, I am on a bike next to someone who paid $34 for the 45 minute spin class and they are going all out to get their monies worth.

That is inspiring and makes me want to work harder. And although it may seem counter intuitive my second favorite part is the cancelation fee. If you do not attend the class you signed up for you will be charged a $20 no-show fee on top of your monthly membership. When my alarm goes off at 6 am and I really just want to push the snooze button I resist because of the combination that I know I should go work out and that I will loose $20 if I don’t. After dozens of workouts via Class Pass these are my favorite these are my favorite classes around Manhattan:

Studio: Flywheel Chelsea
Class: Fly 45

I have been a fan of spinning for years and this studio has some of the best classes I have ever been to. Over the course of 45 minutes it is reported that you can burn up to 800 calories and with the combination of sprints, hills, jumps, and the upper-body portion of class, I believe it! I love how the bikes are arranged in stadium tiers, they provide you with shoes, you ride in the dark, and they have great playlists! (Regular $34 / class)

Studio: EVF Performance Upper East Side
Class: Outdoor EVF 360

Never did I think I would ever do bear crawls and brupees after my swimming career ended, certainly not voluntarily, and here I am paying to do them. As much as they stink, they certainly do tone a ll over. EVF is a cross fit gym which would usually scare the heck out of me but this hour long 360 class is taught outdoors and is a combination of strength and conditioning comprised of solely body weight movements. And if I had any qualms about a “cross fit” class they were smashed after the first hour, the instructions are so encouraging! (Regular $35 / class)

Studio: RegenerateFitness NYC
Class: Regenerate Signature Circuit

Of the 40 classes I have attended while using Class Pass this one might be my favorite. When you walk in Reggie, the amazing instructor, gives you a heart rate monitor to strap to your chest and you are guided through eight five-minute intervals that toggle back and forth between five minutes on a reformer (a fancy elliptical) and four, minute long exercises. I have gone six times and on average have burned 500 calories a class with my best performance clocking in at 520 calories in less than 45 minutes. (Regular: $40 / class)

Studio: Exhale – Upper East Side
Class: Corre Fusion Barre

Sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone and that is exactly what barre is for me. These classes are so difficult and three pound weights have never felt as heavy as they do at the end of the 10-minute arm section of the class. It is very difficult and I am not good at it but I like the challenge and opportunity to improve. (Regular $37/ class)

Studio: Push Lab Fitness
Class: Total Body Core

This class is held at by far the smallest studio I have been to, the size of a large bedroom, but a ton of hard work happens in that tiny space. This is only offered on weekends and the total body aspect is a great mix of upper body and lower body exercises and leaves me completely spent. (Regular $32 / class)

Other classes I recommend: Pilates Machine Class at Sal Anthony’s Movement Salon, Pace for Success at Tabata Core, 45 Minute Metrics at Peolotn, Rathet Zooba! at Banana Skirt Prodcutions and Cycle at The Monster Cycle Studio.

Classes to pass on: All classes at West End Fitness.

I am sure the $125 price tag may see a ridiculous amount to spend on gym or fitness membership but keep in mind I live in New York City. Before Class Pass I went to New York Sports Club which was $77 per month with my corporate discount, $99 regularly. A month of Equinox will set you back $220 in NYC and for an unlimited 30 day membership to FlyWheel you will need to cough up $375. As my mom says, Class Pass “is an investment in Kelly”. There is no referral bonus but they are in over 25 cities now and I highly recommend everyone sign up for Class Pass!
