The Early Bird: An Evening Honoring Stella McCartney

There has always been something about Stella. Who else can list devotees ranging from Cara Delevingne to Yoko Ono, or possess a name instantly recognizable by both commoners and fashion folk alike? The daughter of Paul McCartney and activist Linda McCartney is kind of a big deal not only for her stunning designs, her massive circle of friends, or her eco-friendly approach to style: she’s also truly one of the most innovative designers out there right now.

As a result, it’s no surprise that last night was spent honoring Stella McCartney. The woman is legendary not only for her designs, but for her wit as well — she made a dig at nearly every person in the room that night, and there were plenty there. From models Natalia Vodianova and Kate Upton (who McCartney claimed don’t smile, much to their protest), to Harvey Weinstein (who she joked was the founder of Lane Bryant), the event was packed with hordes of her friends and fans. It certainly set a certain mood: the evening opened with a montage of her famous friends that weren’t able to make it, including Gwen Stefani, Reese Witherspoon, Bono, Kate Winslet, and Chelsea Handler (except joke’s on you, she was actually there to introduce McCartney herself). The night was then spent in an interview style format, with Jerry Seinfeld acting as the interviewer. It doesn’t get more riotous than that.

Truth is, if anyone deserves her accolades, it’s Stella McCartney. She’s one of the only designers out there that knows how to make eco-fashion, well, fashionable and chic. She was named one of the most powerful women in the UK by Woman’s Hour on BBC 4, and a Woman of the Year by Glamour. She was also awarded the Green Designer of the Year at the ACE Awards. Even crazier? McCartney was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to fashion. An important lady, indeed.
