Styling You home office 2015

I really wasn’t at home much in January. And when I was it was a crazy blur of school holiday and work juggle.

The essential stuff got done while each day my office became less of the haven it was meant to be and more of a cluttered, heaving mess. A mess, I decided to ignore – instead working in the lounge room on my laptop.

On Saturday I gave myself a big kick up the bum. While Mr and Master SY were at cricket, I locked myself in my office and didn’t leave until it was time to get ready for a date night at the movies.

Here’s a visual on a section of the BEFORE.

Up until moving to Brisbane a little more than 12 months ago, I didn’t even have a separate office space. I had a corner of the lounge room. (You can see what it looked like here)

Letting my office get into the state it was showed a complete lack of gratitude for the space I’d worked – and work – damn hard for.

I wanted to return it to its former glory, de-clutter and move out things that no longer made me smile or were no longer needed for my 2015 work.

I wanted to want to head into my office each morning, happy to be surrounded by things that made me feel good.

I wanted order restored – in the beauty products I trial; in the clothing and accessories that come in for shoots for the blog.

I achieved that.

And I can tell you.

IT FEELS SO GOOD.

Before I share the after photos of the Styling You home office 2015, I have to tell you that my space is far from minimalist.

I have a (probably unhealthy) obsession with motivational quotes. I like that this room can be home to my girly bits and pieces, fun mementos and collectors’ edition Barbie dolls.

It’s the stuff that really wouldn’t fit anywhere else in our home but in here it feels like me – and works for me.

The biggest difference to the space since I last shared it is that I now have a sofa bed in the room as well. It does close up the long, narrow room a bit but it’s worth it for extra guests, for sitting on to read during the day and for Master SY to come and do his homework in the afternoon while I work.

Unfortunately it’s also a magnet for parcels that arrive during the week! A bit like the end of the kitchen bench is for school notes and household bills.

I also moved my desk away from the wall and turned it around so that I no longer have my back to the door when working. Not sure about the feng shui of that move but it FEELS better. The only things I don’t like are the visible cables and wires. Unfortunately they are necessary to make the internet work in this room (I shudder at remembering the stress of this time last year and no proper internet connection!), but if anyone has a neater solution, I’m all ears.

What I need to invest in this year is a quality office chair that is good looking AND supportive. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

To make way for the sofa bed, the Retrojan accessories cabinet that once sat in this room is now my bedside table and accessories are all in the bedroom.

The rest of the furniture is the same as I featured last year – mostly IKEA pieces *lovingly* put together by Mr SY.

My office is also my Lady Room (a phrase coined by Mrs Woog way back in the day). A big sliding door cupboard holds my “opposite season” clothes, as well as flat shoes and sandals in drawers. My shoe-robe holds my heels and clutch bags.

I apply (and trial) makeup and do my hair in this room as I can put the air-con on first to prevent the makeup sliding and hair frizzing.

I also dress in here for Model and Me shoots for the blog, ducking out to the verandah outside to take the images – hence the tripod at the ready at the door.

Let’s have a closer look, shall we?

Can’t wait to declutter another part of the house. Have you been decluttering lately? Do you have a dedicated office space or lady room?

PS. If you have a home office, I’d love you to share it here with a photo in the comments below or on Instagram with the hashtag #SYhomeoffice … I’ll use as many as I can in a future blog post.
