Envelope Pocket Derby Tote

Are you a Kentucky Derby fan?? If so, you’ve got to get your hands on the Derby Style fabric line from Melissa of The Polka Dot Chair – it’s super cute and fun! While at SNAP a little over a week ago (an awesome creative blog conference) I took her sewing class where we all made totes using her fabric – it turned out perfect!

I love sewing totes! They come together pretty quickly, are a great way to showcase fun fabric, and they get tons of use – win win win!

A fun feature of this one is the mis-match outer material. The pattern called for the horse fabric on the exterior, but I really wanted the envelop pocket to pop, so on that panel I used the small plaid fabric. But the horse fabric was too cute to just use as lining, so I went ahead and used it for the back panel. I really love it!

I should have taken pics along the way, but I got caught up in the fun of sewing in a class group, and only snapped the before – oops!

The exterior pocket is fun – I hadn’t done an envelope pocket before, so I loved adding it on. It was easy to construct and makes for a fun feature on the bag.

The handles were attached and then covered in this special sewable paper, I wish I could remember what it’s called!

Rumor has it that Melissa will be releasing this bag as an available pattern, so stay tuned for that!
