How to Layer Vinyl

So you want to try out vinyl? You’re in the right place – it’s one of my favorite things to craft with!! Today I’m going to show you the trick of how to layer vinyl, the adhesive kind – I love this method! I cut the vinyl with my Silhouette machine, but this technique will work for anything (even if you hand-cut something).

I just love being able to create things whenever I need them – little gifts for friends, etc.

I know you’re going to ask – I order all of my vinyl through Expressions Vinyl online – it’s great quality, huge selection, and they have lightning-fast shipping, like I don’t know how it gets to me so fast! (that’s an affiliate link, but I am really smitten with them!) Speaking of them, for this project I’m using their new transparent glitter in this project – it’s super cool cause you can see through it – both layers are fuscia pink, but one is regular color and the under layer is transparent glitter – see how you can kind of see through it below?! It let’s a hint of the notebook strips show through the project, and I love the result.

It’s so fun when projects come out just as you imagine them!

Anyways, let’s get started on the trick behind layering vinyl that’s adhesive. Once I learned this it was eye-opening! I used to layer everything onto the project, using new transfer tape each time. This is so much better!

First up, you’ll want to have all your layers of various colors cut and ready.

Then START WITH THE TOP LAYER – I wanted the solid vinyl on top, so I started with that. I used transfer tape, put it on top of the vinyl and rubbed it good.

Then peel the backing off the vinyl so it is still adhered to the transfer tape.

Now, get your second layer ready. Place the first layer (still on the transfer tape) on top of the second layer. Rub to secure.

Then peel the backing off that second layer of vinyl. At this point, both layers of vinyl are being held by the transfer tape.

If you have more layers, you just keep repeating these steps, adding them in backwards order to the transfer tape sandwich that you’re creating. I only had 2 layers, so I moved on to attaching it to my project. I simply placed it where I wanted it, then peeled away the transfer tape – see how both layers of vinyl went down onto the project at once?? So cool, right?!

That’s all there is to Layering Vinyl!! Pretty neat trick to get it all on at once!

I made these notebooks for those on my Paparazzi team that were attending a training with me. If you’re ever looking for a way to make some extra money on the side, Paparazzi is AMAZING – I’ve a rep for several years and just love it! It’s $5 jewelry, which means it sells itself because, you know, 5 bucks – everyone’s buying! and you get 45% commission, which is really high. Anyways, I’m always looking for new people for my nation-wide team, so if that interests you, just shoot me an email!
