The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter Review

The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter may look familiar – I had a giveaway a few months ago for a bunch of The Body Shop Smoky Poppy products in February!

It has a fragrance like no other skincare I have. The Body Shop Smoky Poppy is sultry, so if you’re looking for something that’s seductive, this is one you may want to try. But don’t dilly dally because this scent is limited edition!

As with all of The Body Shop’s Body Butters, this one is formulated to help moisture the skin. I put it to the test, and here are my observations.

P.S. In case you missed it, I’m having a Canadian giveaway right now. Enter until April 24 for a chance to win the Essie Resort 2015 Collection!

The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter Review

Fragrance

Let me start off by saying that I’m very particular about the way something smells because it doesn’t take a lot to give me a massive headache, especially when it comes to floral fragrances.

The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter has a scent that I’ve never smelled before. I have no idea what a poppy smells like, but based on this skincare product, I’d describe it as sophisticated and mellow.

Its softness is what I think prevents me from getting a pounding headache. This floral leans more on the feminine side, although I’m a strong believer that anyone can wear any scent they want, regardless of what gender it’s supposedly advertised for. Wear what you love!

There’s a hint of smokiness, but it’s not like a hickory-smoke-I-want-to-start-barbecuing-in-the-park type of smokiness. It’s more of a light muskiness, which creates a sensual vibe. This is one of those ‘mature’ scents, and not the kinds that make you smell edible. (Normally, I gravitate toward the latter, so it took me by surprise that I liked this scent.)

Of course, when you first apply the body butter, you’ll notice the scent is at its peak. After it absorbs and throughout the day when you go about your business, you may catch subtle whiffs of it. It’s nothing overpowering, however, I wouldn’t suggest that you use it with a clashing perfume in case it transforms the overall scent into something that’s undesirable.

On me, the scent lingered all day, although for most of the day, you would have to put your nose up to my skin to smell the fragrance. It’s not so strong that it’ll replace a perfume.

Hydration & Formulation

The packaging says that The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter is suitable for normal skin, although on their website, it says that it’s more specifically for normal-to-dry skin.

Since the weather has been getting milder, my skin hasn’t been feeling as dry as it did in the winter. And with this body butter, even after a single use, it left my skin feeling silky and soft, as promised.

I only needed a small amount to get the hydration I was looking for, which is great because the tub will last me a long time.

After continued use, I noticed that my skin maintained the softness, and my skin felt comfortable.

If you don’t use too much, it doesn’t feel greasy, and it absorbs quickly. The texture isn’t overly thick, so you won’t have to spend forever and a day to rub it into your skin.

Packaging

While I realize that the consistency of a body butter lends itself better to a tub, I’m not thrilled with the habit of having to scoop out product with my hands. (I enjoy moisturizers that come with pumps because it’s more sanitary.) I make sure that I wash my hands thoroughly and dry them before reaching into the tub. Don’t want to get extra, unnecessary bacteria in there, right?

The positive aspect of the tub is that the lid screws on securely. This means that if you’re planning to take it with you, it’ll be safe in your bag on your travels.

Also, since the tub is wide and flat, it’s less likely to get knocked over accidentally on your bathroom’s vanity.

Beauty with Heart

I’m a fan of The Body Shop not only because of the products they offer, but also because they stand for something greater. When you buy from The Body Shop, you’re promoting fair trade.

In this case, The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter is enriched with Community Fair Trade Shea Butter from Ghana. The money helps the community that harvests the Shea Butter by funding water pipes and wells and providing medical care and better education and shelter. Pros

  • Seductive, sophisticated floral that’s subtle
  • Leaves skin feeling silky soft
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Doesn’t feel greasy
  • A little goes a long way
  • Enriched with Community Fair Trade Shea Butter from Ghana
  • Tub is wide & flat, so you won’t accidentally knock it over on your bathroom’s vanity

Cons

  • The tub isn’t the most hygienic packaging (so make sure you wash & dry your hands before dipping in with your fingers)
  • Although the scent is soft, it’s possible that it could clash with a perfume you’re wearing
  • Limited edition (If you’re interested in it, you should snatch it up before it’s gone!)

Final Verdict: 8/10

If you’re looking for a classy- and mature-scented body butter, The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Body Butter is a good choice. When I smell it, I get a mental image of a powerful, career-oriented woman who’s climbing the corporate ladder! But, really, anybody can wear it. This scent just makes me think of someone who’s very professional, confident, and feminine.

Are you a fan of The Body Shop Smoky Poppy? Do you prefer scented or unscented skincare products? Do you use body butters all year long or just in the winter?
