Book Review: Sleeping Beauty’s Daughters by Diane Zahler

Princesses Aurora and Luna have grown up in a palace on a high cliff by the sea, carefully protected by their parents, the king and queen. No one visits, the girls can’t stray beyond the castle walls, and, curiously, all sharp objects are forbidden.

But accidents will happen—particularly when an old curse still has power. Soon, in spite of all precautions, Aurora is struggling not to slip into an enchanted sleep.

Frantic, the princesses accept the help of a young fisherman named Symon and embark on a daring ocean voyage to find their godmother—a fairy who may be able to break the spell. From fearsome beasts to raging storms to a vengeful enchantress, many dangers befall them, yet they must not give up . . .

For if Aurora sleeps, she will not wake for one hundred years.

Two sisters, both princesses, one with an unknown terrible curse and the other with a passion for adventure. When the terrible legacy of Sleeping Beauty is passed to her oldest daughter Aurora her parents do everything in their power to prevent it from coming to pass, but much like Sleeping Beauty’s own curse there is little that can be done to stop the future. The only hope the young Aurora has is the strength, adventure and bond with her younger sister Luna.

Diane Zahler has done it again! It’s so rare that an author can create a series of books that consistently blow you out of water. Each of the books in her Fairy Tale Princesses series has built upon the last in a way that has me excited and eager for the next book Zahler writes. That said, each is unique and individual in a way that leaves you completely satisfied after you’ve finished reading. And Sleeping Beauty’s Daughters may be my favorite thus far.

In reviews past I’ve commented about how much I enjoy Diane Zahler’s writing and the way she crafts her stories, this time I thought I’d speak more to the story. Perhaps it’s that I come from a family of three sisters, but I couldn’t help but instantly connecting with sisters Aurora and Luna. Their love-hate relationship, the humor and the hope they have for one another was genuine and incredible to read. With the added spin on the traditional story of Sleeping Beauty it made for a fantastic read to dive into for a few hours. Now, without giving too much away, both the original Sleeping Beauty and now her eldest daughter Aurora share the same curse of pricking their finger and falling to sleep for one hundred years. The comedy and adventure that ensues while Luna and their new teacher try to keep Aurora awake was perfect, all of it leading up to a magical fairy tale ending.

Within the pages of Sleeping Beauty’s Daughters by Diane Zahler readers will find magic, adventure, heart, comedy and much more to fall in love with. Characters Luna and Aurora are a pair you can’t help but connect with as you follow their journey to find a cure for the legacy their mother passed on. Without question I will be back again and again for Zahler’s writing, no matter the genre or age group she writes for. Diane Zahler’s books contain worlds of imagination, superb writing and characters you hate to be parted from and Sleeping Beauty’s Daughters is perhaps her best book to date.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 7 and up. Readers of all ages and genres will fall in love with the story of two sisters striving to save one another during their perilous journey to find a cure for their family’s curse. An absolute favorite!
