When kids move from CVC short vowel words to words with blends {and even digraphs}, it can be a tricky transition. It was for my 1st grader.
My biggest piece of advice when phonics gets tricky is to take away the words and focus more on sounds, like we did with our beginning phonemic awareness cards.
That’s exactly what these 8 FREE beginning blends worksheets get learners doing. Even though they do include the letters of the blends, the focus is more on listening for beginning blends with the pictures included.
The first step is to touch each letter and say each separate sound, like /s/ /l/.
The next step is to start on the dot and slide the finger across as learners blend the two sounds /s-l/.
Then, learners find the TWO pictures that start with that blend and dab it with dot paint markers.
Included in the pack are 8 FREE beginning blend worksheets: 2 for l-blends, 2 for r-blends, 2 for s-blends, and 2 mixed review pages.
Enjoy!
