Zimoun: The Installation

The Installation by ZimounThe work of Swiss artist Zimoun has been widely exhibited and critically acclaimed. We have featured his pieces before, but his outstanding work calls for more than one-time recognition. Zimoun is a self-taught artist, who focuses mainly on the interaction between space and sound. His kinematic installations reference the chaos of the modern world, but simultaneously remain minimalistic. With the use of simple mechanical systems (such as motors, wires, ventilators) and raw materials like plastic bags or cardboard boxes, Zimoun transforms and activates the space. The artist's latest installation is 329 prepared dc-motors and cotton balls, adapted in the old tank located in Dottikon, Switzerland. Combining visual, sonic, and spatial elements, Zimoun creates intricate interplay between the elements, seemingly based on simple rules. He often uses multiples of the same prepared mechanical elements to examine the creation and degeneration of patterns. Once running, the graceful mechanism is left to its own devices. Suddenly, new creative categories appear, such as deviation, refusal and transience. Zimoun’s work expresses human’s relationship with technology and reminds the viewer of the motors that move everyday life. Without being pinned down to a specific direction, the artist arranges a space with an abundance of mechanical activity and enables the viewers to discover various approaches and interpretations of his art.
