Caring for Your Wooden Cutting Board – Cleaning and Oiling

For our second Christmas together, Scott made this checker-patterned wooden cutting board for me.

Clean your cutting board thoroughly on both sides and allow to dry

Proper care is the key to keeping these delicate wooden boards in top shape. We keep ours clean on a day-to-day basis by using a solution of vinegar and water. Submerging the wood in water would cause it to swell and degrade.

Cleaning supplies required: mineral oil and vinegar & water

In order to maintain the wood, we use mineral oil. This is cheap and easily purchased from your grocery store or pharmacy. Start with a clean, dry cutting board, and follow the steps below:

1. Start with about a tablespoon of oil and rub into the back of the board in a circular motion

2. Take care to oil the sides and all grooves

3. Flip and apply oil to the top of the board. Allow to dry on a clean surface for at least 24 hours before use
