Meet the pets who travel more than you

Most of the time I love checking out other people’s travel blogs and stumbling across someone’s Instagram account who is in the midst of travelling the world over an extended period of time. Sometimes, though, I get jealous. Just for a little moment I wish it was me taking a selfie in the Brazilian rainforest, sunbathing on a Caribbean beach or slurping cocktails out of a coconut, with a little sparkling umbrella for decoration and all. Sometimes this moment lingers for a little longer, and that is usually when I come across a traveller who has found the perfect adorable travel partner to share their adventures with – and no, I’m not speaking about couples who travel the world together, but rather about people who go on adventures all over the globe with their cutesie-pie pets. Some more conventional than others, here are six pets who travel more than you (and me).

Monique, the chicken

Yes, you read right. Monique is a chicken who travels the world. In fact she is sailing around the globe accompanied by her proud owner Guirec Soudee. Guirec and Monique have been on the go for 2 years now and while he does most of the sailing and cleaning on board, Monique takes in the view and lays the occasional egg.

The couple started out in France and the Canary Islands before crossing over to the Caribbean via Greenland and further south to the Arctic – can you imagine a chicken balancing on an iceberg?

Guirec says, that even though they don’t share a language – Monique is Spanish, he is from France – they got along right away and the hen started laying eggs and relaxing into the travel lifestyle almost immediately.

Amelia, the sailing cat

Chickens aren’t the only conquerers that take the world by sea, and even though some people might tell you cats are afraid of water Amelia, the sailing cat is certainly an exception from the rule.

Amelia is joined by her owner Liz Clark and together they call themselves the ‘She-pirate & the Tropicat’. They have sailed along the western coast of Mexico and Central America and even explored the South Pacific.

Where we feel vulnerable means there’s room to grow … nervous for my speaking event tonight after many years without speaking in front of a group … but leaning into fear has always made for beautiful surprises and deepened connection to others. missed my flight last night but made it on standby this morning … on my way!! #missthatkittyface @patagonia_surf #ourchoicesdefineus #ignitepositivechange

Gandalf, the cat

Let’s stay with cats for a while and meet Gandalf, a 2-year-old cat from sunny California. He might be an indoor cat most of the time, but to ensure a safe way for him to explore the world, his owners have taken him out on a leash ever since he was a little kitten.

In no time he was so used to his little adventures, that it took no more than his owners to pick up the leash and he would come running as excited as a Travelette who just found a glitch fare.

So far Gandalf has only explored 2 countries and 8 states, but the plan for this year is a big trip to New Zealand – he even has his own pawssport!

Gandalf is at the airport and heading back to California~ He has loved his time in Texas and hopes to visit again soon! He would also like welcome all his new fur friends from the Internet and hopes they enjoy his travels #cats #cat #catlife #catoftheday #catsofinstagram #catstagram #caturday #gandalf #meow #bestmeow #bestoftheday #instagood #nofilter #instacat #pet #pets #petstagram #petsofinstagram #adventurecats #campingwithcats #adventure #saturday #fly #catting #explore #kitty #catsonleashes #travel #instatravel

Sailordog, the rescue dog

Sometimes the best things in life happen unexpectedly. For example when you quit your job to kayak around the world, and then you find a stray dog to join your on your adventures. This is exactly what happened to Sergi Basoli when he found a stray dog in Sardinia. The two took a liking for each other and so #Sailordog got to join Sergi on his kayak.

Since then the two have paddled around Sardinia, Corsica and down the Italian coastline all the way to Sicily. They take breaks during the winter but have recently picked up the paddle again to continue their journey.

Loki, the wolf dog

Loki is not like any other dog – but he is like any other dog should be, at least according to his owner Kelly Lund. If you ask him dogs should not have to guard houses or sit in the backyard, they should join their owners on their adventures and accompany them wherever they go. That’s why Loki gets to go along on every trip Kelly does – and that means quite a bit of travelling!

Kisses and punches are pretty much the same.

By documenting his journey Kelly hopes to inspire other dog owners to do the same, and to be honest there is really no reason not to travel with a furry friend when you look at these fluffy pics!

LeeRoy Brown & Miles, the goats

LeeRoy Brown might not be the most common name for a goat, but this is not a normal goat either, so I guess it is only appropriate. LeeRoy Brown and Miles are two goats who are doing something I could have never dreamed of in my life. In 2010 Steve Wescott decided to follow a spiritual call of God and walk across America to raise awareness for a Christian non-profit organisation in Kenya. Although he wanted to take a dog with him for company, he ended up hitting the road with LeeRoy Brown, a hybrid between an alpine and a Boer goat.

The two of them started walking in Seattle with the aim of reaching Manhattan. They walked through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri,Illinois Indiana and part of Ohio, but sadly LeeRoy got very ill while in Ohio and passed away in October 2015.

Steve was recently joined by a new goat named Miles, who will finish the walk to Times Square at Steve’s side.

Does this inspire you, too? Which animal or pet would you chose to travel the world with?
