Top 10 Travel Tips for New York City
New York City can be an intimidating place. It’s massive and expensive, but also the dream of many – so how do you get the most out of travelling to New York? With one Travelette currently based in NYC and two former New Yorkers on the team, we thought who could share more to the point travel tips for New York than us? After a bit of brainstorming and link sharing, we came up with our Top 10 travel tips for New York City:
1) How to Navigate the Subway
Use an app like Hop Stop to help navigate the subway – makes it less intimidating! (Google Maps also works well)
2) Riding the Subway
If an empty train car rolls up on an otherwise crowded train, do not ride it! There is a reason that train car is empty yet I always see tourists getting excited and piling into it, only to be miserable and running out of it at the next subway stop. (Nikki)
3) Bathroom Breaks
If you need a clean bathroom but there is no Starbucks or McDonalds around – find a hotel. The bigger the better, as most have conference/banquet rooms used by non-hotel guests.
4) Shopping Essentials
Always stop and shop at the department store Century 21 and for fragrances at Bond No 9. (Annika)
5) Get out of Central
Don’t stop at NYC central – also explore Bushwick, Williamsburg or Green Point! (Katja)
6) Staying Fit
To keep up with your yoga practice on the road, sign up for the traveling yogi pass at Bikram Yoga LES. (Annika)
7) Going Out
The Meatpacking District is not the best choice to go out in Manhattan by far (too touristy, too pricey) – I love the bars in the East Village and the more club-like bars in the Lower East Side. (Nikki)
8) The Best Restaurant in NYC
For the best restaurant in town (or at least my favorite) head to Bar Pitti and have Rigatoni Pitti! (Annika)

9) Coney Island
Head to Coney Island for a little day trip and the best hot dog you’ll have in your life – it is so wonderfully bizarre. (Annika)
10) Take Up a Habit
Of course we mean the coffee-drinking kind of habit – we’ve rounded up our 8 favourite coffee houses in NYC here.
