Cascais Beach :: What To Do Outside Lisbon

The town of Cascais, Portugal is a fairly typical beach town besides the fact that it is steeped in history and is drop dead gorgeous. And while it is a total stunner (note all the photos as proof of it’s beauty), the town offers what most beach towns offer. You will find lots of flip flops, beach balls, and typical touristy beach items for sale plus a square here and there, and some restaurants serving up the day’s catch, but, really, Cascais is all about the beach.

So, if you are trying to figure out what to do in Cascais and you want to do more than simply roam the streets with a camera in hand or eat another satisfying fish feast, head directly to the Cascais beach. There are a couple little areas to choose from and all seem to be great options. It was pretty windy the day that we went, which may be another reason the town exists (I guess we all need something to do when it’s too windy to sit on the beach). The water is surprisingly cold (and that is coming from kids who are used to swimming in the Nordic!) which is because of Cascais’ proximity to the western edge of Portugal and the open Atlantic.

We were so pleased to have stayed for a few hours, watching the packed beaches dwindle to a few locals who joined us from the high cliff to watch the sun set…
