thorns, black, sweet..

{the blackberry}

Blackberries grow wild in Washington state.
The blackberry vine is filled with thorns so one must be careful when reaching for the perfect berry.

The sweetest berries are the ones that are touched by the warm sunshine or..

perhaps the farthest from your reach ..

and you must think..

should I risk..

..receiving a painful prick
from a thorn just for
the sweetest berry?

..would you?
Berries have wonderful health benefits.
The blackberry contains lots of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that may help us fight diseases such has coronary artery disease and cancer, and there are some studies citing a reduced risk for cognitive disease as well.

The quickest and LEAST painful way to pick berries is with a pair of good gloves and clippers.

Cut the vine and remove the berries.

Blackberries will hold lots of moisture so it's best to rinse them quickly and avoid leaving them in water.

Enjoy for breakfast, over ice cream, as a snack, or make pie or cobbler.

Sweet coconut, vanilla granola sprinkled on top.

This is my first comfort food of the season:) More to come!
Berry Cobbler

If you follow me on IG you probably saw this. cobbler in progress.. (I'm using raspberries because we ate all the blackberries:) from Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond (here)
***You don't see the "after" photos as it never set and remained a liquid while baking in the oven for an hour! Determined to succeed .. we started all over and reduced the butter.
Second time around the butter was reduced to one 1/2 of a stick and the result was a success!
If you make this recipe make sure you change her recipe and use just 1/2 the butter.
The consistency of this cobbler is more cake-like and a nice change from a more traditional version.
Here are pictures of what it will look like (from Ree Drummond)

Delicious!
