A Cup of Tea With Me

Poking my head out from 70 loads of washing to peep in and see how you are all doing? Seriously, it was only me gone this past week and I don’t know how I have managed to amass so much laundry. Hopefully it will be back to my extremely unrealistic goal of trying to do a load a day washed, folded and put away. Does anyone even actually do that? Do you?

I also had extremely awesome intentions of either going for a walk or doing yoga every morning I was away, which is utterly laughable. Maybe for any other trip, but not this one. My first morning I woke really rather seedy after a glass or two of wine too many the night before, the second morning only slightly better after learning my lesson the morning before, and the third morning I hit the nail on the head by going back to bed after breakfast. How good are hotel beds? I had been saving my Peppermint magazine for such a moment – I penned a few of the articles this issue, and it’s always fun seeing my byline in my favourite magazine (Kelley, the editor, is one of the most kickass chicks ever). It’s also cool to see how it all comes together with photos and nicer font than my laptop screen.

Everything is a little late this week, including this post (as will be the newsletter, unfortunately, hang tight!) as I developed tonsillitis right before I went to PBEVENT, and the Monday I was home I was wiped out. I may have even had a sneaky nap at lunchtime but I felt much better after a proper night’s sleep. The house was in great condition when I walked in the door, but my laissez-faire attitude all of Monday meant I spent a great deal of today vacuuming play dough out of the upstairs carpet.

I also very virtuously spent a great deal of time last night making some healthy granola bars from a popular health blogger’s book and they are utterly inedible. So sad! The mix made about eight million too, and cost a fortune with its fancy ingredients so I’m loath to throw it out. The girls asked for one today and I gave it to them, grateful that they at least didn’t think it was awful. They ate the emergency chocolate chips off them that I put on there to save them, and handed them back to me. Fail. I’m thinking I might have to salvage them somehow… normally I turn it into granola for the top of yogurt but this is not quite the texture that will work.

Speaking of fails, I made mayonnaise this morning, all ready for my brunch BLT and RIGHT at the last second, it split. Seriously, ten minutes of careful pouring only to have it break down at the finish line. Couldn’t be saved either, and I was too hungry to care. Avocado stood in for that creamy aspect I was craving and all was not lost. Well, it was, but you know what I mean.

I still haven’t made a cake for Lunchbox’s birthday on Sunday, so I’m going to rustle up his favourite, this very decadent but super-simple mud cake. It’s such a hit! Even I like it and my ambiguity about chocolate is well-documented. I remarked to someone the other day that in five and a half years of food blogging there’s only about three chocolate recipes in the archives. Oh speaking of which, someone asked me the other day where “Lunchbox” comes from, and why I call my husband that on the blog. It’s from any Kevin Smith movie, really – Jay calls Silent Bob his hetero lifemate and one of the nicknames he has for him is lunchbox. And for any of you confused about Biggie and Smalls…

Notorious, dey got to know dat

Any third child would most likely be Tupac, given they’d probably fight all the time.

Ok I’m out, I have to do my tax, watch a lot of weird royal documentaries on YouTube, and try some other recipes that may or may not work. I’ve also got two very cool giveaways coming up very soon – the annual reader survey (with $100 voucher to Booktopia) and another in collaboration with Your Home Depot - you’re gonna LOVE it, so stay tuned!

What’s news with you? Do you really do the laundry thing?
