I’m not so sure that it is a generational thing, more something everyone goes through at some time in their life, like playing in mud or eating worms. You stand in front of a mirror and pull a few faces, check your hair, turn and check your ass. Well, that is the way that it used to be, probably since the mirror was first discovered and before then anything else which reflected. Now the fleeting moment can be kept forever, and thousands of girls / women are saving their best for that album they will one day show their grandchildren.
Although, to be honest, I doubt that many of these photographs will ever make it into an album. At least, not the printed paper type. Perhaps a photobook? The idea gives me shudders.
Will people pass their Instagram accounts on to their children in years to come? Apparently you can preserve a Facebook account as a memorial for future generations, so why not any other social media profile?
Or are there going to be such networks in the future? Perhaps, rather like yesterday’s smart phone will is out of date today, social networks will last for a while and then gradually disappear in favor of something else. An Apple wrist network? Perhaps a set of glasses with a small chip for all your memories so that you can quickly scroll through without anyone seeing what you’re doing. Perfect for someone with a bad memory but many friends: who is that person? Facecheck all know data in the spectacles memory bank and scroll possible positives…
Not as unlikely as you may think. Imagine a mixture of Facebook, big data, Instagram and Google Glass with face recognition software. Facebook knows who your friends are…
But will we really want to pass these photographs on to future generations? Isn’t it bad enough when Grandma shows everyone those baby pictures from yesteryear, you know, the ones with you lying bare-ass on a rug and giggling… Reminds me of the
Of course, not all of the selfies which we preserve for future generations are going to have our children feasting their eyes on pursed lips and asking what a duckface is, or whether we were imitating a platypus. Smaller children may well feast their eyes elsewhere and imagine lunch is about to be served, especially for the young woman above, while men and pubescent boys will undoubtedly have other thoughts too.
I have still to find an old film self-shot where the photographer pursed her lips. Does Marilyn Monroe count, since she didn’t take the photograph?
