Add Inspirational Quotes to Thrift Store Art

You’ve seen them all over the internet – photos of landscape scenes with cheesy quotes or sayings over them. People have even made them with quotes from Michael Scott and Ron Swanson – those ones are actually inspirational to me. So I decided to make a real live version.

DIY Motivational Quote Art – what you need:

  • thrift store art (framed, with no glass)
  • letter stencils
  • gold leaf paint or paint marker

Step 1: Choose a quote

There are basically an infinite amount of quotes to choose from, but I’d highly recommend going with a Ron Swanson or Michael Scott original. I chose: “Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.” But I definitely considered: “I am Beyonce, Always,” or “The worst part about prison was the dementors.” Find one that speaks to you.

Step 2: Lay out the stencils

Once you have your quote, lay out the stencils that will spell it out. I recommend laying out the whole thing before actually painting on the letters – I didn’t do that and the quote is a little uneven (gives it character though, I guess).

Step 3: Add the quote

When all the stencils are laid out, use some gold leaf paint or a paint marker in the color of your choice to add each of the letters. Let it dry, hang it up and enjoy the inspiration!
