Remembering the 90s, Drew Barrymore Style

Some days I really miss the nineties. Granted, I was too young to go to a grunge concert or rave, but I still remember the time with nostalgia. The music was depressing but meaningful. It was sort of cool to be broke and rely on thrift shops for your wardrobe. And so many awesome movies came out during that decade. Silence of the Lambs, anyone?

So yeah, I love the nineties and try to keep the spirit alive in my daily life. The other night I tortured my boyfriend by singing Fiona Apple songs and made him watch videos of her on YouTube. I pulled out my CD of Pretty on the Inside and thrashed around to the track “Teenage Whore”. I thought about Jordan Catalono.

One of my favorite actresses and style icons of the nineties was/is Drew Barrymore. Remember when Barrymore was this sprightly thing with blond hair adorned with daisies? Remember her ads for Guess? She was all dockers and babydoll dresses, chokers and dark lipstick. So nineties, so cool.

OMG! Jane magazine!!

Drew in blue.

I die for that shade of blond.

Classic Drew.

I loved Drew in Mad Love and of course, Boys on the Side, where she played a crazy but lovable gal named Holly. Whenever I feel a need to feed my woman’s lib or whatever, I pop one of the movies into my DVD player.

Boys on the Side.

The great thing about that time period is that women could be both feminine and ultra edgy. Frilly pieces were often paired with something masculine, like combat boots. The makeup was a little reminiscent of the forties, where ladies like Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo chose a strong lip color and kept their brows thin. It was cool to use lip liner as lipstick and bedhead wasn’t a “look” you went for but actually had because you were too lazy to find a brush. It was pretty bad ass.

Barrymore loves the nineties too, according to her interview with Into The Gloss. And it’s her love of the decade that helped inspire her new line of cosmetics, Flower, available at Walmart.

Walmart isn’t exactly the chicest place, but it’s affordable. And the colors used throughout the Flower brand are so “grunge chic” that I fully intend to scoop a few products up. Some of my favorites include:

Foxy Browns eye-shadow pallet

I haven’t seen a single product that cost more than $10 bucks. Affordable, just like the nineties.

Do you remember the nineties or do you like the style of that time? Tell me about it. Will you try any products from Flower?
