The Duchess of Cambridge visits the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day
The Duchess of Cambridge carried out her annual engagement – a favorite of royal watchers – today in Aldershott, Hampshire. Catherine visited Mons Barracks, the home of the Irish Guards.
The Irish Guards are one of the Foot Guard Regiments of the British Army. Along with the Royal Irish Regiment, the Irish Guards are one of the last remaining Irish regiments in Great Britain.
Prince William has special ties to the Irish Guard – he is the Colonel of the Regiment. Royal fans will remember that the Duke of Cambridge wore the Irish Guards tunic and forage cap to his 2011 wedding.
Today’s event has a long history beginning with the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother used to visit the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day and ceremonially pin shamrocks. In 2012, nearly a year into royal life, the Duchess of Cambridge “took over” the role. She has visited the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day every year since. This was her fourth annual visit.
At Mons Barracks, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had a private visit in the officers’ mess upon arrival. Around 11 a.m., they appeared for the annual St. Patrick’s Day ceremony. Catherine pinned bunches of shamrocks to the uniforms.
Most importantly, the Duchess of Cambridge gave a shamrock to Domhnall, the Irish Guards official mascot. Domhnall is an Irish Wolfhound, much beloved by the regiment. We look forward to seeing him every year! This year, he was a bit wiggly and his shamrock didn’t quite stay on.
The Duchess of Cambridge surprised everyone today with her exquisitely chic ensemble. Kate debuted a new coat by Catherine Walker. Reporters have said that the coat is brown, though some believe it may be dark green. We are awaiting confirmation from Catherine Walker, but either way it is very stylish!
Catherine accessorized with her Lock & Co. “Betty Boot” hat. The felt pillbox hat is a favorite of the Duchess, and she has worn it to this event before.
The Duchess again chose to wear the Cartier shamrock brooch. The delicate pin is solid gold and features a green emerald in the center. The brooch is actually owned by the Irish Guards, and is loaned to royal women visiting their regiment. It is a great honour to wear the brooch, having only been seen on the Queen Mother, Princess Anne, and the Duchess of Cambridge.
Her Royal Highness also wore her Kiki McDonough citrine pear drops, Cornelia James “Imogen” gloves, and Emmy brown suede shoes and matching clutch.
