Shopping Tips – 2 March 2015

I just want to thank the thousands of you who are reading, sharing, and commenting on the shopping tip updates. Since I started doing this research a good few years ago I have saved an awful lot of money. I’m hoping that by sharing what I do every week lots of others will too!

I’ll have a new recipe on Wednesday using the best of seasonal Irish ingredients, and I hope to fit in an allotment/growing update soon.

Here are my shopping tips for the week beginning 2 March 2015. They include all the major supermarkets in Ireland. If you’d like to be included or have a product deal you’d like highlighted please do get in touch. Details are below.

ALDI

The following Super-Six deals end at midnight on Wednesday (4 March 2015):

The Super-Six fruit and vegetables for 49c each are: cabbage, conference pears, pomelo, mushrooms, salad potatoes, and tomatoes.

The Super-Six meat offers for €4 are: 500g chicken fillets, medium whole chicken, 600g stewing beef, 800g beef mince, 340g dry cured bacon fillet steaks, 320g lamb leg steaks/lamb stir fry.

On offer from Thursday are loads of heavy-duty tools, and some gardening bits & bobs. However, also on offer is a 12L stockpot (€24.99), and a “bain marie” (€21.99)which is ideal for melting chocolate/making curd. Mind you I prefer to use a glass bowl but this is the kind of pot that Dad used to make us rice pudding in when we were kids.

From Sunday the special offers include motorcycling safety equipment, and home security equipment. There’s a nifty heavy-duty padlock that might be just the thing for securing a garden shed.

DUNNES STORES

Carrots and Parsnips (500g tray) are 99c, 7.5kg of Irish Rooster Potatoes are €2.99. There’s a meal-deal for €5 for a “big night in” which includes a large Chicago Town pizza, a bag of wedges or oven chips, and a Smarties cones/Rolo Cones box. If that’s your kind of thing it’s fairly good value. I think I’ll pass though!

Selected Country Kitchen pita bread, naan bread and bagels are 2-for-€3. Bunalun coated rice crackers are reduced to €1.50 per packet, Linwoods Flaxseed 190g range are now €3 each. Keep an eye out as there is a gluten-free/free-from sale on in store at the moment so you can certainly nab a bargain.

Also if you’re looking for a steam cleaner, Dunnes Stores have a good few VAX models on special offer so do check them out.

LIDL

The weekly fresh offers are:

Diced Lamb €3, Sirloin Steaks €4, Hereford Steak Mince €3, Pork Loin Chops €4, Hot & Spicy Mini Chicken Fillets €3.99, Smoked Haddock with Parsley Sauce €2.49. Iceberg lettuce and kiwis are 39c, leeks are 69c, and 5 organic bananas are €1.19.

There’s running gear on special today. I got some trousers and sports underwear the last time they were on sale and they’ve served me well. Although I admit the starburst trousers are a bit OTT (best for night running).

From Thursday there’s a range of gardening equipment on offer. I like the look of the gardening clogs for all the family, they’re priced at €2.99 for the kids, €3.99 for the adults. It’s not clog weather at the moment but I’m optimistic that it’ll be a good Summer! Also that day you can get some electrical kitchen equipment – I won’t be buying but if you’re looking for a contact grill, hand blender or bread maker it might be worth checking out.

SUPERVALU

I really want to be fair here and include the deals on offer but the website pdf isn’t up to date so if I get a chance to head in store myself tomorrow I’ll take a pen and paper with me.

In the meantime I want to highlight a couple of things from their own brand range that do taste great and are good value too! These are my personal choices, so if you have anything you want to add, go right ahead below or on the Facebook page!

Buttermilk Soda Bread, Coated Rice Cakes (Yoghurt & Chocolate), sponge scourers, toilet roll & kitchen paper, cheddar cheese, porridge oats, premium ice cream tubs, and smoked salmon.

I realise it’s a bit eclectic!

TESCO

It’s up to 50% off clothing in the Florence & Fred range online with free delivery for orders over €50, and free returns by post. The schoolwear is available online too which is just as well as my fella seems to have sprouted in the past week and it looks like I’ll have reinforce my uniform stash to keep us going to June.

There are 24 different items on 3-for-€10 on selected cuts of meat and fish. This includes chicken fillets and premium mince which I think are some of the most popular cuts of meat in an Irish Supermarket.

60g of red chillies will cost 39c, lemon net 3-pack is 59c, beetroot vacuum pack 79c, 1kg brown onions 79c, salad onions (scallions) bunch 79c, swede 85c, wonky mushrooms 89c, wonky carrots 99c, white cabbage head is 99c. Coconuts are 59c, 400g ripen at home plums 79c, whole mango 99c.

If you have a deal or a discount you think would be worth sharing here then drop me an email (wholesomecook-at-gmail-dot-com) to be added to the list for consideration. Note, this does not guarantee you get included! These are my own personal choices and I’m not sponsored in any way (monetary or benefit in kind) to provide this information. This blogpost is based on my own personal research and please don’t reproduce it elsewhere.
