Shopping Tips – 23 March 2015

I know I mentioned last week that I’d do an Easter egg roundup. I’m going to pop it on the blog tomorrow as otherwise it’d make the shopping tips this week far too long, so keep an eye out for it.

In the meantime, here are the shopping tips for the Irish supermarkets for this week!

ALDI

The Super-Six fresh fruit/vegetables until the 25th March for 45c a pack are: Baby rooster potatoes, courgettes, green apples, large onions, lemons, and rocha pears.

The Super-Six fresh meat/fish until 29th March for €3 per pack are: Salmon fillet, Secret Chef Spatchcock Chicken, Secret Chef Marinated Chicken Fillets & Premium Pork Chops. Also on offer are a sirloin joint for €9, and specially selected striploin/ribeye steaks for €9 a pack also.

There’s a combination of household, camping and gardening items on sale from Thursday. If you ever get frustrated about the range and quality of your wifi the further you move away from the router, their wireless broadband repeater for €24.99 might solve your woes.

You’ll find some lovely bamboo toilet accessories on sale from Thursday. Although if you are still in the market for some gardening/grow-your-own bits & bobs the offers from last Thursday are still in store.

DUNNES STORES

As the Dunnes Stores brochure lasts for a while, the tips from last week still apply!

Shop & Save is back! Spend €50, get €10 off your next grocery shop (minimum spend €50). So it’s basically a cashback system where you get 20% off your next shop, providing you spend a min of €50 – it goes up in increments of €50. Regular shoppers in Dunnes Stores will be familiar with the deal. It’s great value!

Looking ahead to Good Friday, many of the frozen fish ranges are half price which gives you a chance to stock up the freezer. There’s nothing wrong with frozen fish in my book!

Dried fruit and home baking products are on sale again. You could buy enough to make simnel cake (who makes this at home?), or you could stock up the cupboards for the months ahead if you set aside a little bit of cash.

LIDL

The fresh offers this week are: mini chicken breast fillets, beef stir fry, and pork medallions are all €2. 2 trout fillets are €3, 2 chicken and leek pastry parcels are €4.99, a stuffed carvery leg of lamb is €13.99, and a whole duckling is €7.99.

Red onions, carrots, parsnips and baby new potatoes are 39c.

On special offer from today, a box of decorative easter eggs for painting (including the paint) for €6.99 – good for those who do egg hunts in the garden/don’t like to give chocolate. An electronic kitchen scale will set you back €11.99 – I’d be lost without mine and this isn’t a bad price. A 30L flexitub (I call them a rubble bucket) costs €4.99 and this is a great price for the handy plastic tub with 2 sturdy handles.

From Thursday, Lidl has a lovely selection of sturdy kids toys. I’m not a massive fan of chocolate eggs for Easter, and I think it’s a great alternative to spending a fortune on sugary treats. Maybe you might like to consider getting the small ones a sticker book for €1.49, or a pull along garden truck for €9.99 instead.

SUPERVALU

The wine sale continues until Wednesday, with prices starting from €8. If you were looking to pick up some special wines for Easter, this would be a good time to start! The cheese sale continues until 25th March also – this is at the counter, not at the pre-wrapped shelves so be careful to check before you buy.

The 2-for-€1 mix and match are: white sliced mushrooms, carrots 850g, wrapped broccoli crown, onion sleeve, lemon and lime pack.

The 2-for-€2 mix and match are: yellow melon, grapefruit net, kiwi punnet, carrot broccoli and cauliflower tray.

All the SuperValu deals reset on Thursday morning so I’ll update these shopping tips once I have the new offers.

TESCO

The fresh fruit offers this week are: Ripen at home plums pack 79c, grapefruit 4-pack 99c, mundali pear punnet €1, 1kg oranges net €1, and a pineapple is €1.29. The fresh vegetables on offer are: brown onions net and a savoy cabbage cost 39c each, baby rooster potatoes are 79c, and 750g of carrots are 89c.

It’s worth bearing in mind that 7.5kg of full sized roosters is just €3.69 and there is more than enough in that to feed a family for a week so even though the small spuds are cute, and on special offer, you’ll get more out of the big bag than the little one!

I’ve spotted that Ben & Jerry’s tubs are half price. This is quite nice ice cream, although a little bit goes a long way. You might want to pick up a tub while it’s on special if you’re a fan.

The ham fillet I mentioned last week is still on special by the way!

BONUS POINTS

If you bought the Sunday Independent yesterday, you’ll have received a €10 voucher for Aldi. It’s also accepted in Tesco as they accept all their competitors vouchers, so if you can’t get to an Aldi, don’t throw it away!

Once again I’m kicking myself for picking up crap fresh produce that won’t store well. It’s worth taking the extra time to check over your fruit, veg and other fresh items before you leave the shop as if you end up having to throw out your shopping then it’s a waste of money.

If you have a deal or a discount you think would be worth sharing here then drop me an email (wholesomecook-at-gmail-dot-com) to be added to the list for consideration. Note, this does not guarantee you get included! These are my own personal choices and I’m not sponsored in any way (monetary or benefit in kind) to provide this information.
