Shopping Tips – 30 March 2015

While these are the grocery shopping tips for the week beginning Monday 30 March, don’t forget that I also have an Easter Egg roundup from last week. I’ve picked out the best of the deals on offer in shops nationwide. I’m not long back from Tesco and the eggs were selling fast. If you’re interested to see what’s on offer, just click on the image below to be brought to my selection:

My shopping tips this week are:

ALDI

The Super-Six vegetables on offer until 5th April next are: broccoli, turnip, carrots, white potatoes, red apples and parsnips, all costing 39c per pack.

The Super-Six meat offers which ended today – €3 per pack are: Salmon fillet, Secret Chef Spatchcock Chicken, Secret Chef Marinated Chicken Fillets & Premium Pork Chops. Also on offer are a sirloin joint for €9, and specially selected striploin/ribeye steaks for €9 a pack also. As soon as I have the updated meat offers I’ll update this post.

The special buys on Thursday include a maxi lunch pod for €4.99 this is an insulated lunchbox which keeps food warm for up to 4 hours, including a fork/spoon/spork (anybody for a game of knifey-spooney?). We have something similar and it’s well worth it if you like to bring warm food out and about with you. There are no Sunday special buys this week as it’s Easter Sunday but GAA players should keep an eye out next Monday. More to follow next week.

Also worth checking out is a dozen free range eggs for €2.49, they come with a pack of “shrinkies” which you cut and fit over an egg before boiling. It’s a novel idea, and it may persuade the non-egg-eating child in your life to give one a go. Nevermind the fact that €2.49 for a dozen free range eggs is excellent value.

I’m going for bonus points for no egg-puns this week!

DUNNES STORES

They have a very swish new brochure which is a visual treat.

Mix and match the following fruit items on a 2-for-€3 deal: snack pears, freddie fyffes bananas, yellow melon, snack apples, snack oranges, kiwi tray. On the veg side for the same price deal are: tenderstem broccoli, fine beans, organic onions, savoy cabbage, baby corn, mangetout, and rooster potatoes 1kg. They’re keen to point out that this deal applies to any fruit and vegetables flashed 2-for-€3 in store and that extends to over 40 different products in the fresh aisle, so not limited to the fruit and veg above.

6 hot cross buns are now €1.49 – bargain just in time for Good Friday, and don’t forget that the shop-and-save is still in place so you can get back 20% of the value of your shop, providing you spend a minimum of €50 in store – it goes up in increments of €50. Terms & conditions apply so be sure to check in store.

LIDL

I’m kicking this off with a big warning. The kids’ rainwear comes back on sale on Thursday. We make 2 big purchases of outerwear each year. The first is when the ski-gear comes in stock, the second is the rainwear. Last year I didn’t get to the supermarket until after 10am and I only managed to pick up the smaller size for the younger of the 2 boys. The rain dungarees are invaluable with all the outdoors work we do, we also love how the kids stay warm and dry. If you don’t believe me, ask the 3-year-old:

The fresh offers in Lidl this week are: kiwi and turnip for 39c, grapes are 2-for-€3, and rooster potatoes are half price for 99c a pack.

There are plenty of choices when it comes to meat options. As I’m lucky enough to have tested every single one of them out (and let out my belt a notch in the process), I recommend the turkey crown on the bone for €18.99 for a family Easter meal and plenty of leftovers afterwards. If you’re on a budget, the Irish smoked eye loin joint wrapped in smoky bacon is fab, not forgetting that the sausage meat is back in stock for €1.99 – I recommend you pile it in my freezer for use during the year and it’s very good quality.

SUPERVALU

Special mention this week for the €10 dinner tray which serves between 4-6 people. Included in this offer are a stuffed pork steak with potatoes, and a boned-rolled-stuffed chicken meal. While I’m not normally a fan of convenience food, this tray offers a great fresh alternative for those who can’t/won’t cook on Easter Sunday. Thumbs up here.

Supervalu smoked salmon is half price at the moment, another product that I’ve tried and tested, this is great value and worth picking up if you’ve salmon on the menu this weekend.

Mix and match 2-for-€1 are: carrot and parsnip tray, cherry tomatoes, aubergine, baby potatoes, lemon net, and courgette.

Mix and match 2-for-€2 are: orange tray, pineapple, golden delicious apple tray, mixed vegetables, sweet potato tray, and yellow plum punnet.

Once again, a fantastic mix of fresh fruit and vegetables that I would happily buy on offer. That mixed vegetable tray on the 2-for-€2 is particularly good value as each tray is enough for 1 main family meal, excluding the carbohydrates.

TESCO

The fresh offers this week are: brown onions and savoy cabbage for 39c, red peppers are 50c each. A whole white cabbage is just 79c, they are normally sold by weight, and not as a whole so it’s very good value.

1kg of everyday value chicken legs is €2.44. That is a brilliant price, and you should get more meat per kg on the chicken legs than you would on a whole roast chicken. Drumsticks and chicken thighs are slightly more expensive at €2.79 per kg but again it’s still a great price and worth it if you’re on a budget.

300g of beef meatballs is €1.76, again a good price if you like to buy them pre-formed.

Liberté fat-free yoghurts are reduced to €2 per pack of 4. That’s quite good value actually and I hear they’re rather nice.

If you have a deal or a discount you think would be worth sharing here then drop me an email (wholesomecook-at-gmail-dot-com) to be added to the list for consideration.
