I was happy to partner with Glad Products Company in this post. All opinions are 100% my own.
Being a food blogger means cooking and baking quite a bit. It’s quite often that we find ourselves with more food than the three of us can eat. If I have a busy week coming up, I try to make new recipes during the weekend and as a result, there have been some times when we had a whole cake, a cheesecake, and cookies to eat all at the same time. That may sound like heaven but it’s a bit much for three people and the food will go bad by the time we actually finish it.
The first time it happened, I was on the phone with my friend and I was joking about all that food and that I needed to find someone to give it to and she suggested that I bring it to a homeless shelter. How did I not think about the homeless shelter? How did I not think about donating the food anywhere? It may not be non-perishable food that food banks always collect but there are definitely places that would welcome home cooked meals and even desserts.
One of my favorite places to bring desserts have actually been the local firehouses. I always feel like our emergency workers are not appreciated as much as they truly should be. And, even though it’s not exactly a monetary donation, little man and I very much enjoy bringing some goodies to the local firemen.
For the past year, I’ve been working on a cheesecake cookbook and making cheesecakes every time I get some free time. It’s a slow process because I don’t have much free time but I have made about 10 cheesecakes so far. Most of the cheesecakes I’ve given away. I’ve used some of them as a thank you for helpful neighbors and we’ve brought some to the firehouses.
Even though my little guy is a little scared of the loud noise at the station and the possibility for a fire alarm, he still loves bringing goodies to the firehouse and looking at all their cool trucks and gear.
Glad has been a great accessory in packaging the treats when bringing food donations to different places. Glad also shares our giving spirit. They believe that communities are built around human connections and giving back to those around you. There are so many inspirational stories you can read on GladToGive.com but I have to warn you, grab a box of tissues and be prepared to get into a giving spirit.
Giving is just as heartwarming for the ones that give and those that receive. It always warms my heart to see people’s faces when you surprise them with a donation. Even at food banks and red cross centers, where people donate daily, they’re always grateful for every single donation. But it’s double satisfying for us when we surprise and drop off treats for the emergency workers because it’s a little unusual for them.
My son and I got to surprise another crew when we brought them some Valentine’s Day treats this past weekend. We were busy baking a delicious Glazed Strawberry Pound Cake and some heavenly Honey Doughnuts all day and decided to donate most of the goodies we made.
