Did you know that one out of every 200 pregnancies is affected by placenta previa? Today we take a closer look at the condition and what might happen if you’re diagnosed.

Placenta previa definition

The placenta provides the baby food and oxygen from his or her mother, and usually attaches high up in the uterus. With this condition, the placenta attaches low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the mother’s cervix.

Why is placenta previa problematic?

According to Web MD, this condition can be cause for concern because:

  • The mom may lose a lose a lot of blood, which can be dangerous for her or the baby.
  • The baby could be born too early, at a low birth weight or with a birth defect.

Who is at risk for placenta previa?

The below factors put moms more at risk for developing placenta previa:

  • Have had a previous C-section
  • Have had 5 pregnancies
  • Are age 35
  • Have had a surgery that affected their uterus, such as one to remove uterine fibroids

What are the symptoms for placenta previa?

If you have an onset of any of these symptoms, please contact your doctor:

  • Medium to heavy bleeding during the first trimester
  • Any bleeding in the second or third trimester
  • Symptoms of early labor

What is the treatment for placenta previa?

Depending on what week you are in when placenta previa is found, if your bleeding doesn’t stop, or if you’re close to your due date, you might have to stay in the hospital.

If you’re not bleeding, you might be advised to do the following:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, such as running or lifting weights.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse

There is also a good chance that if your placenta previa is discovered before your 20th week, the placenta could move so that it no longer blocks the cervix before your due date.

If you have any questions, please talk to your doctor.
