The Redmi 7A launches in India with better specifications but same price as the Redmi 6A
Xiaomi is completing five years in India and has catered to the needs of the consumers, especially in the budget and affordable segments. The Redmi A series has been fairly popular in India and Xiaomi claims to have sold 23.5 million devices in the last two years since the Redmi 4A. The company is now launching the Redmi 7A as its new value proposition and it comes with an upgraded camera compared to the Chinese variant.
The Redmi 7A features a 5.45-inch HD IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. On the back, the smartphone comes polycarbonate unibody shell with a matte finish on the back and a P2i coating to splash-proof the device. There is no fingerprint scanner on the back but the Redmi 7A supports face unlocking via the front camera.

A notable upgrade on the Redmi 7A is the rear-facing camera. While the Chinese unit comes with a 13MP sensor, the Indian variant of the smartphone is equipped with a 12MP Sony IMX486 sensor, which has been used in the past on smartphones such as the Redmi Note 7 (Indian variant) as well as the Xiaomi Mi A2. Xiaomi also says that AI scene detection will be arriving on the smartphone via an OTA update soon. On the front, the smartphone features a 5MP camera.
Under the hood, the Redmi 7A gets a Snapdragon 439 SoC, which is claimed to be 26% faster than the MediaTek Helio A22 on the Redmi 6A. There’s 2GB RAM with options between 16GB and 32GB in terms of storage. Additionally, the smartphone gets a dedicated microSD card slot which supports up to 256GB of external storage. Xiaomi has not launched the 3GB RAM variant in India, perhaps, prevent the 7A from polarising users who might otherwise choose the Redmi 7.
In terms of battery, the Redmi 7A gets a 33% larger battery over the Redmi 6A. Further, the 4,000mAh battery can now be recharged at 10W compared to the 5W rate of the 6A. Xiaomi claims this battery should last around 2 days for most users without any hassles.
A noteworthy addition which is certain to be liked by Indians is the wireless FM radio option which lets you play the radio even without plugging in a headset.
Coming to the most provocative bit about the smartphone – its price, Xiaomi India has not increased the price of the new smartphone in the series over the older one in spite of the upgrade in specifications. Just like the Redmi 6A, the Redmi 7A comes at only ₹5,999 ($87) for the 2GB/16GB variant and ₹6,199 ($90) for the 2GB/32GB variant. To celebrate its five year anniversary in India, Xiaomi is offering ₹200 off on both the variants for those who buy the smartphone in the month of July.
The Redmi 7A will available for purchase starting July 11th via Mi Online store and Flipkart and later on via offline stores throughout India. Xiaomi is also offering a two-year warranty, which makes the Redmi 7A a steal deal for this price.
