Spanish artist Paco Pomet uses oil on canvas to paint familiar scenes and iconic gestures based on historical photographs and landscapes. His technique utilises sepia-toned colours, giving us a taste of the familiar aesthetic of vintage photographs and faded posters from the past. Pomet’s deliciously bizarre sense of humour manifests itself in his oil paintings which contain a visual twist with a healthy dose of the surrealism.

With an overall monochrome effect, including bursts of unexpected, bright colours – his art is original, quirky and always created with an underlying wit. By combining classic imagery from early photographic works with the early-20th-century Surrealist movement, Pomet’s painting play with the viewer’s brain as much as with the eye. A perfect blend of historical context and visual trickery – 10 points from us.
