SE18 Artillery Place

Have you ever been to Woolwich Arsenal? It has such an amazing war history behind it that I would recommend everyone to go check it out and absorb the unique atmosphere. The area is under massive revamp in recent years; with new flats, the Crossrail and most alarming - chain hotels being built, a lot of its character could diminish even though both the council and developers are very aware of preserving its history. I worked in one of these warehouses back in '08 where the high street was rotten concrete; and back then was pre-DLR, pre-Nandos, and pre-Starbucks. A lot of the original 'shabby' shops are now being closed down; but the only thing I really do wonder about is whether the market stalls that happens every week are being kept. Is it going to be turned into a glossy overpriced one like Greenwich Market? Don't get me wrong I do embrace change as long as the direction is forward, but I would definitely like to soak up this version of the area before the drastic change happens.

The area is decorated with old canons and tanks amongst the factories that used to produce weapons and ammunition. Don't forget the museum and a few unique pubs & cafes. I personally recommend the Dial Arch Pub, which only emerged about two years ago, where you can enjoy amazing food & drinks inside the historic atmosphere of its ancient architecture. I'm a sucker for old brick walls! x
